From Apples to Froyo soon - new to the Tab but not to Android

So, I am getting rid of my iPad and getting a used Galaxy Tab 7 (verizon). I wanted a smaller tablet and I like Android a LOT more than iOS; I'm on my second android phone so I know how it works and all.

Wondering if you can tell me:
- I assume the vzw tab is on Froyo already. I am not going to activate the ESN, just use it over WiFi; will I get a Gingerbread upgrade option?

- I'm concerned with all the "bricked it when going back to stock" threads here - is this tablet particularly troublesome when rooted, or is this something that can happen even if you don't bother to root? (I have never found a need to, but who knows)

- Looks like it's verified that Netflix can be had on the Tab as of about a month ago. Still working?

- Anything right off the bat that is a must to tweak?

It does have froyo on it. As for gingerbread of I was able to reclaim it from my 4 yr old I would check for an update. Mine isn't activated either just on wifi.

I also haven't attempted to root it as shortly after I got an acer a500 at which point my daughter took the galaxy tab. So hopefully someone else can help you here.

Netflix is definitely still working. I would be the first one my kid would run to complaining that if wasn't.
