A few weeks ago i had my number changed and had a phone added to my account through metro, This was before the cm7 update when the banner said virgin mobile, The girl at metro took my phone and looked at it with confusion just trying to unlock it, I had a weird looking lock screen from cyanogenmod settings cant remember what it was, Anyways i unlocked it for her then she looked even more confused not seeing the stock phone look, She goes are you sure this phone is from metro, I go uh yes and gave her my number, she did a few things from the pc and goes ill be right back, Then after about ten minutes another person who im guessing was the manager walks out and goes what have you done to your phone, I go well i fixed it, She goes this isnt our phone, I told her trust me im on your network look me up, Then she goes well your insurance is invalid now after all these changes you made to the phone. I go i have no insurance on this phone its on my indulge, Then i go look can you just change my number ? She walks to the back again and has some other guy come out that could navigate through it, lol i had icons on it they couldnt even recognize and had to show them what each was. Anyways just if you could see the faces they had when they were looking at cm7, Im guessing none had ever seen cm7 :D

I can understand how they would be scared. But for me when I first got the android a Guy from a yahoo chatroom told me hey have you jailbreaked your android yet. I was thinking what in the heck is he talking about. So I Google's it and it took me to a forum.

Is there a youtube video displaying the benefits of all of this. Like many of you guy's friends... the whole "Root" conversaion scares the b-jesus out of me. I've been stock for a month now and have no complaints. What am I missing by having a stock OptM?

Control and the sense that the phone you paid for is more yours than whatever carrier "allowed" you to purchase it from them.
Rooting gives you the opportunity to remove the MetroPCS nag/bloatware. It also gives you the ability to install ROMS on this phone that would otherwise never be available to you.
Those ROMS have much more to offer over the stock you have now. Research Cyanogen to see what's possible.

Rooting should scare those that are prone to jump right in without learning the CYA basics but each step learned will give you more confidence as you proceed deeper into the modding possibilities that are available only to those that have rooted.

    Is it worth it? Yes
Is there the possibility you could brick your phone? Yes, but I'd put it at 1% if you follow the guides posted here, especially the more recent ones. AND that 1% is usually attributed to extraneous issues and not the process of rooting or ROMing. Extraneous meaning, user error, power failure and the like.

jabbawest, you've got me foaming at the mouth to jump head first into it. I wish there were someone close by that I could trust do to this for me. Maybe I'm lazy or extreamly intimadated by the page of instructions that I've seen on rooting. Either way... I'm sure I'll lean that way after I get bored with my phone and want to do more.

Rooting, at least now for the Optimus M, is EASY PEEZY and only one click away. You don't need any assistance for that. Before one click, yeh, there were a lot of people willing to pay those of us that were seasoned long method rooting folks.
Afterwards, you gotta install recovery IF you plan on moving forward with flashing custom ROMS and maybe even overclocking.

You want help, I will, no charge I am not in it for the money. As said its easy as can be now with the one click. Even the custom recovery is simple now.

One thing you can be sure of you get a better experience and better battery life.
I am using a stock based rom with overclocking and I am getting extremely good battery and good usability.

I'm shocked at your words in one aspect. I had mine for a while before I rooted, but it was surely less than the month you mention before I was fed up with MyExtras and Boingo Wifi. I could force close MyExtras after the phone booted to get it to leave me alone about whatever next rap concert was coming up or what have you. But I had to just deal with Boingo telling me about the latest hot spot that I could pay ~$8/month for. How dare these people essentially charge me about $270 to force advertisements down my throat?!

I scoffed at how they tried to force me to keep "Free Games!" in my app list, which was merely an "app" to link me to a site where I could do what? BUY non-free games. The list of bullshit annoyed me too much, so as soon as I learned that I had a way to backtrack completely if I wanted to, I started learning how to root and so on. I've never once bricked it. My phone doesn't have anything on it that I don't want on it.

You'll find that those frustrations are largely relieved even while still on the stock rom from LG once you get rid of the 10 to 20 bloatware apps that are clogging your apps list, but that eventually, you'll start wanting more...
