I did exactly that - I went from an old custom-built gaming desktop to a laptop. I bought an aforementioned Alienware. Not like I really need gaming power anymore, but I did want the most powerful laptop I could buy (hardware-wise) and went with Alienware. Intel I7 2nd-gen CPU, 16GB RAM, Nvidia 560M video card, 180GB SSD (boot) and 7200 RPM 750GB drive (storage). The laptop didn't come with the SSD; I added that on about two weeks after I received the laptop. My desktop had two monitors attached - a 19" and 17". The laptop has a beautiful 17.3" screen and honestly, I haven't had the need to connect a 2nd monitor. The amount of storage I have with the two drives is plenty for me. And the other hardware is strong enough to handle anything I may throw at it, which nowadays, isn't much more than some video editing and the occasional game. I wanted to downsize and I went from a large desktop tower, two monitors, external speakers, keyboard, mouse, and N52 Speedpad to the laptop, speakers, and mouse... and I only plug the mouse in as needed. I got rid of A LOT of clutter.
