Before its batteries started overheating and the whole product line was recalled, the Galaxy Note 7 was actually one of the best smartphones of 2016. Samsung must still be proud of it, because it's putting a tweaked version of the handset back on sale in South Korea.

The new devices, built out of unused Note 7 components and unopened, recalled handsets from the first run, are officially called Galaxy Note 7 Fan Editions. This time the battery has been shrunk from 3,500 mAh to 3,200 mAh, and been put through the 8-stage safety test Samsung introduced after the Note 7 debacle.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm just gonna wait for the Note 8 now.

The last flight I took (a week ago) still had specific warnings that the Note 7 was not allowed on the plane. I don't fancy my chances trying to convince the airport staff that this is a different, safer version.

It wouldn't be a Note 7, it would be a Note FE, and it would say so right on the back. The Note 8 is just too big for me. 6.3" instead of 5.7". No thank you. If they sell it in the U.S. or Europe, i'm getting one.:p

I took a couple of flights on Sunday, and it still was, Samsung Galaxy Note7 is not welcome on planes, with specific announcement and notices.

  6. I'd rather go wait for the new one to come out than risk it with this on. There's a reason why they hold it up.

Did those announcements say the Samsung Note FE wasn't allowed on the plane?:p

Might depend if the authorities and the security know what a Note FE actually is, because if it looks like a Note7, smells like a Note7, and quacks like a Note7....

As I fly quite frequently, I don't think I'd take the risk.

Still not clear if "Fan Edition" is allowed or not.

I've been checking with T-Mobile, but nothing so far.

Took flights from Bristol > Brussels > Beijing last Saturday, on BMI Regional and Hainan Airlines. There was no mention of Note7 ban here at all.
