    Boring old accountant
    hi all,

Finally my S2 will be arriving tomorrow - would just like some impressions/advice regarding which case/screen protector people are using (if at all). I like to look after my 'toys'!
I dont like the magnetic clip type (i always thought they would interfere with the phone) and have always gone for the squishy gel-case type for better grip, and not being too expensive - but what do you all think?
    Any recommendations???

    Thanks!!!

    Roll on tomorrow.... :) :) :)

Got a gorilla glass screen so you dont need a screen protector, and personally i dont use a case as i like how thin the phone feels, if you add a gel case its gonna nullify that!

I bought two screen protectors off ebay, and neither fitted without cutting. The front facing camera hole on the protector is out of alignment - if you cut it, it either looks stupid or you get dust under it.

Samsung manual says not to use a case that has a magnet on/in it.

I recommend reading the manual before you do anything else, lol.

Never buy those hard, clear plastic (aka crystal) cases as they mark the phone somehow and let dust between the phone and plastic anyways.

You can buy sheets of screen protector that you can cut to shape, I might do that at some point, but it will interfere with the touch a bit.

Since the phone is the size it is, I have resorted to storing it in a full size sock rather than a phone sock, until my Noreve case arrives.

Once the phone has been out for a while you will start getting screen protectors that acutally fit :)

When I got my Galaxy s2, I knew which screen protector I WASN'T going to get. My last screen protector made the screen of my last phone worse. It gave my screen a rough texture that was annoying anytime I swiped my screen. It also made my screen a little blurry, that was a visual nuisance. I decided to get GadgetShieldz for my S2, and it turned out fine, no texture problems and it was clearer and transparent.

As for "gel-cases", I don't even go for them. I like how my S2 feels, and GadgetShieldz, which also covers the back, is smooth enough, and I could use the screen protector as if it wasn't even there.

People use their phones in many different environments. Blanket statements like the above are meaningless.

Put the terms "Gorilla" "screen" and "scratch" into the forum search tool and read a few of the results. You might want to rethink that optimism afterwards. Even Corning themselves describe it as "scratch resistant" not "scratch proof".

    • Gorilla glass not so good
The gorilla glass is NOT scratch proof. My SGS2 slipped out of my pocket when I was removing weed (not that type of weed) from my gravel/pebble driveway. It landed face down. This was from a height of ~20cm, and it still got like 7 tiny scratches. A screen protector would have saved my beloved phone. I was lucky with my previous phone (HTC Desire) when I accidentally kicked it across the floor. It slided a good 2m face down and I heard the dreadful sounds of scratches being made. Ripped off the screen protector and the Desire looked brand new ;) Bottom line is DO USE a screen protector.
    • Leather pouch
I use a leather pouch from pdair (PDair Samsung Galaxy S II Leather Case - Vertical Pouch Type (Black)) and I would NOT recommend it. The phone is inserted by sliding it down into the pocket. This produces tiny scratches on the plastic on the back (not the battery cover, but the plastic bar containing the speaker). I would rather recommend a type of silicon case, though I have not tried one myself. Also, they are much cheaper ;)

I bought the official Samsung flip case the same as mrs.flopsybunn, why would this case not be recommended if its being sold, by Samsung, to phone retailers accross the world?
I got this case as I didn't want a screen protector on but needed to cover the screen for work purposes, the magnet (as mrs.flopsybunn says) is very discrete, and you bareley notice it, a very good case in my view but if there is an issue here with the magnet, I will surely investigate further.

How often does one actually use a compass in everyday like? That seems to be the only thing the magnet conflicts with...according to what I've read on google searches. My not have a tough rubbery case for the days that you might be hiking/walking etc.... I think its a PERFECT case. Stylish too!:p

Yeah the compass/GPS signal seems to be the main concern here, just emailed Samsung anyway to make sure, thats no problem with me tbh, if I need the GPS for the sanav, I will just put it in the car holder :)

Edit, I only read the manual when things go wrong lol

    My question to Samsung.....
Hi, I have just purchased a case for my product from an O2 retailer near
me, the case is a Genuine Samsung branded flip case which incorporates a
small magnet for the cover to fall down on. My question is, is it safe
to use a case with a magnet, even when its made, by Samsung, for my
    specific phone

    a reply from samsung....

Regarding your query, kindly be informed that Samsung has designed
specific magnetic fastenings for the Galaxy SII. If you need to get a
magnetic fastening for the Galaxy SII you should get it from our
official places for the safety of your mobile not from anywhere else
because if anything happen for your phone you will pay for the cost of
    its repair.

Do you think the guy actually read my question, or just read out a pre-written answer to a topic covering my question lol.

I think its a standard response, however given that your phone has no hard drive & no magnetic storage device built into it there is no reason why a low power magnet (such as one to keep the flip front of a case closed) would effect the device in any way. High power magnets are another matter, but thats a story for another day

Another response from Samsung after I mentioned to them why they were selling official Samsung cases for the Galaxy S2, when they had magnets incorporated into it.......

    Thank you for contacting Samsung.
If the case is not magnetised then it is useable with the Galaxy SII. If
there is a magnet on the case we advise it is not used as it can have a
    harmful affect on the phone.

Think of this what you will, my phone is being replaced for an unrelated fault but I did take the 'Official' Samsung case back to the shop, they refunded me without question and I got a casemate and
