When i play a song on the default player the phone crashes after 30 seconds then proceeds to run a scan on the media. My music is on an sd card. could this be the reason?

Could well be, but only if the SD card is faulty (my music is on my external SD card, works fine), try copying music to the internal SD (or a different external SD card that definitely works) and see if it works then.

    HI,
I have the very same problem, music plays ( using the default music player ) and crashes after a random period of time, sometimes it'll play a number of tracks before it crashes( most played about 10 tracks ). The whole phone goes kaput - I was using the timer on the clock app and that was reset and visited web pages were lost - the phone network signal indicator goes off too so it's a full shut down restart thing.
I have my music on in the internal storage ( no sd card yet ) so I don't believe that is a factor.
I did seem to get some relief by sync'ing my music to the phone using media monkey but the problem is back again so dragging and dropping to internal storage doesn't look like its the cause.
I have heard that if you listen to music through the music hub that this relieves the problem but I like to keep data feeds off and music hub doesn't like that.
I haven't had any other problems with the phone - for example watching movies has been faultless and I'm so impressed with the screen BUT I CAN'T PLAY MUSIC and that's fundamental for me.
I'm going to try a different mp3 player - I've read elsewhere that WINAMP works so I might try that - there's likely to be a few alternatives out there. I'll report back my findings...

Your phone has a problem, it shouldn't do that. First thing to do is try a factory reset. That will mean reinstalling everything, so I'd recommend Rooting and backing up with Titanium Backup.

Had exactly this issue this morning at the gym, after only having the phone 3 days (only installed a handful of apps). And discovered this thread.

I listen to music alot, and this is really frustrating. Happened this morning about 5 times in a row, stock music player plays fine for a random amount of songs, then crashes out. The screen flashes up with the music player, before disappearing, the desktop widgets disappear for a few seconds and restart as well, and the media scanner then runs. It looks like some sort of soft reset. Doubt it is a SD card issue, the songs are stored on the internal 16GB card, so you would think it's reliable. Tried power on/off still the same.

Been able to reproduce at my desk as well, leave the player running and it crashes out, can't be anything to do with motion or battery dropouts etc.

Any other ideas out there?? or things i can check??

Tried poweramp app for android for playing music, and it's been playing fine all afternoon. Great app too, sound with the EQ is much better.
I've just specified one folder that has my music in it. If i was to guess at where the issue may be with the default player is it does a full media scan, and may have picked up some corrupt media file or ID3 tag problem.
Bit of a pain i have to pay $5 for an app just to play music, but ah well.

What firmware version do you guys have? I have personally never experienced this issue and I first got my phone on KE7. One possibility is that your song files itself are corrupt and when it attempts to play it the music app crashes.

    Android version 2.3.3
    Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE7-CL215725 root@DELL103 #2

yep, agree, PowerAmp is an awesome app:)

I don't think it's necessarily related to mp3 files i'm attempting to play, as sometimes they play through, other times they don't. It's likely an mp3 file buried somwhere in the directory tree that is corrupt. Noticed PowerAmp features list says it handles corrupt ID3 tags better so obviously has better error checking code.

I had this problem too, and after reading through this forum thread tried a different music player app (I chose winamp as I've always loved winamp on my desktop) which seems to have eliminated the problem completely.

Im so glad I wasnt the only one with this problem. Decided to install PowerAmp too and what an amazing app! Thanks for suggesting this as a solution! This app is so much better than the stock app anyway. Now...

Is it possible to remove the stock "Music" icon from the app screen?
If not, is there a way to redirect it to launch PowerAmp?

    1) You must root to remove the Music app. To remove icon in the homescreen, just delete the icon. To remove icon from app drawer, get another launcher or apps that allows for hidden apps.

    2) When you select a music file to be played, a few options for selecting apps should appear. Just select the PowerAmp and mark it as default. If the options does not appear, then go to Manage Applications and under ALL, look for the stock music app, then clear defaults from there. Then do the first step again.

Thanks Russell... Although Ive had my phone for a few months, Im still not very well versed with what I can do with it. Nevertheless, I was able to get the music files to launch PowerAmp when launched from the My Files folder.

However, "root"ing is something I have never done. Where can I learn to do this? Do u have a link that would explain it so you dont have to do it? lol

It is quite surprising to hear that people having such problems: there can 2 good solutions: replace the MicroSD card or returning the phone for a replacement under warranty: rooting and deleting apps, buying apps etc seem like compromising: I never had any problems that I read in this forum: very strange indeed.

I was not using SD card. The issue is with the stock player.

I am assuming you manage to set the PowerAmp as your default music player. I used Go launcher. That has an option to hide apps in the app drawer.

As for rooting, there are a lot of threads dealing with that but I cannot advise personally because I don't root either. So far my battery can last me a day, the personalization available for the phone are plenty enough without root, so I feel don't really need to at this time.

Play around with the phone first, read up on rooting, then only decide if you want to do it.

    Cheers

OK, Im thinking of trying out the Go launcher. If I do install it, will I need to reinstall all my apps, contact, etc? And if I dont like it, is it fairly easy to restore to stock android?

You will need some time to get the interface working the way you want to with any new launchers. SO just have to spend a bit of time and energy to try it out. Launchers does not means the apps are gone. Everything is still there.

The stock launcher would also be there. Just have to clear defaults for the Go Launcher assuming you set it as default, the press the home key and you would get back the option to choose which launcher to use.

    Cheers

I am now having exactly the same problems as those described earlier in this thread. If anyone has found a cause/solution if would be good to hear from you. Otherwise am I going to have to get a new music app? Surely this should be addressed by Samsung if their default app is faulty? Cheers.

well I have been having the same issue. I have tried a factory reset but sadly the problem persists. I have also tried using a different player from the market but it doesn't seem to help. I have just had the phone for less than 2 weeks now and I really hate this as i was expecting much from the device. Guys kindly help if there is any other resolution to this because I'm really getting psyched!!!

If you have tried the methods mentioned above and it doesn't work, then best you just go back to the shop and get a replacement. Like you said, its only been 2 weeks. I don't have the problem, and most of those who do can resolve it with either a factory reset or using a different app.

    Cheers

I am seeing a similar issue, I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 (Android 2.3.4) with about 13 GB of music (~ 2000 songs) mostly mp3s (but a few m4as) stored on an external SD card. I don't think the card is the issue as I haven't had any problems transferring music to & from it (although I did need to switch on USB storage, when copying from PC).
I'll start up the stock Music App and can browse and play a few songs and then randomly it will slow down and I get an error message and I have to force quit.

I was wondering if it had anything to do with album art as after moving from iTunes/iPod classic I've embedded a lot large artwork (sometime up to 500k) into each music file - but that's just a guess.

Can any of the people who saw this issue in the stock app and have switched to another player (dbPowerAmp or Winamp etc.) report back and confirm that they are no longer having problem or that they are still seeing issues.

    Thanks.

I am having the same issue with default music player (Android 2.3.3) have about 2 GB of music, but mine runs good for like 20 - 30 minutes and then starts crashing. it start that stupid media scanning process and on top of that i lose all my network signals. i have to reboot the phone in order to get signals back. haven't tried any other player apart from the default one so i guess i will try another player, and then we will see what happens.

i really hope they have solved this problem in ICS :-(
