So I went to use my camera today and a black screen popped up and then seconds after a warning box appeared and said camera failed! I did a soft boot and factory reset and nothing will fix it! I'm over my 15 day trial period so I can't take it back. Anyone else experience this or have possible fixes?!?!

Try connecting to kies, see if there is any firmware upgrade. But from what I read on xda while ago, most who suffered that, had to send their device to claim warranty.

I suspect it's a hardware problem, which would still put it under warranty. You could try taking it to a store for exchange, maybe you'll find a soft-hearted person there.
What happens if you install a different camera app from the market, same problem?

Do you have an SD card in your S4? I had that problem on my S2 Skyrocket and when I removed the SD card the camera worked fine.

Are you rooted? and/or did you disable any of the Samsung apps?

(example: If I disable s-voice, and try to enable the setting for voice control of camera, that causes the camera app to Force close)

I ahd the same issue 13 days into owning the S4, bog standard phone with no routing, it was a little intermittent (as faults always are when yor trying to show the phone shop) but the forward facing camera never seemed to have a problem working, I ended up asking for a replacement handset there and then as is was still within 14 days. new handset and not a problem since.

The shop did try to say it was down to a app causing the problem till they went through all aps installed and couldn't find anything. The only camera app other than standard i had tried was snap chat but only had it on the phone for a day and removed all the associated files.

Somewhat unhelpfully you don't say where you live or which carrier you use but if you lived in the UK it wouldn't make any difference what warranty you have or what the trial period is.

The Sale of Goods Act in the UK requires that goods sold are of a "merchantable quality" that basically means that they have to meet reasonable expectations, which include not breaking in the next month. I know very little about US consumer protection laws but as mrpnut correctly points out, there is a one year warranty so you can still demand that it be fixed regardless of any trial period.
