Galaxy S8 HDMI adapter

I'm excited that the S8 supports HDMI out. I have a Roku on my TV, which I can wirelessly mirror to. But HDMI is nice for watching Netflix at a hotel, on the TV in the kitchen, at someone's house, and even for professional uses, too.

So I'm going to share what I know so far and see if anyone else can fill in some suggestions.

The protocol that the S8 uses for HDMI out is called DP alt mode (Displayport alternative mode). This is the same that most USB C devices use. The MacBook Pro uses it. The Nintendo Switch does NOT. So theoretically, any adapter that works for the MBP will work for the S8. But for the Nintendo Switch, there is no adapter that currently works (only the dock works).

So any DP alt mode USB C to HDMI adapter should work. But we all know that "should" doesn't necessarily mean it does.

There's a number of adapters on Amazon. Most of them are marketed as MacBook Pro accessories. The official Samsung one is $50. There's also the DeX dock that turns it into a computer interface. But it is $150. So I prefer going with something $20 or less.

I've been impressed with Pluggable's adapter. They have a video showing it working, so that has me mostly sold over the other items. Though some of the others may be a bit smaller.

I'm thinking that I'll get one adapter that just has the HDMI. But I'd also like one that provides power to the phone at the same time. This is the only potential item I've found that has that (without being a much larger dock device). I don't know if it works or not, though.

Thank you for the information. I have ordered the USB C to HDMI cables and am hoping that I can run PowerPoint presentations on displays/TVs with HDMI input. Theoretically I should be able to do that, but will find out soon.

You're welcome! Which one did you buy? My S8 gets here Wednesday and I haven't ordered an HDMI adapter yet.
