    Hello every body.

I guess this have been already discussed, but I can't find a thread about this. So, I started this one.

On Nexus S, I am very disappointed with the stock Gallery App :
    - Shows only the leaf folders in a flat mode
    - Folder names shortened (no place to see the entire name)
    - Maintains a useless "parallel database" and won't show "non-indexed" pictures
    - Scans the whole memory card (instead of only a "PICTURES" folder)
    - Lags sometimes until the "parallel database" is finished (which takes a long time)

To sumarize, I would greatly prefer something working as :
    - Windows file explorer + Windows picture wiewer OR
    - ACD SEE

Do you know if there is an alternative app that can be installed AND
launched by the camera when clicking on "view pictures" ?

    Thank you for yours answers.

I find QuickPic to be very good.

Many of the file managers (Astro is one that comes to mind) will give you thumbnail views of your images, more detailed file and directory, and allows you to link image files to other tools. I don't find it as convenient as gallery but might be more to your liking.

ES File Manager is another good free option.

I agree with the QuickPic recommendation. It is what Gallery should be.

I also agree QuickPic is far better. I can finally organize my pictures into folder EFFECTIVELY.

I still feel the android market for Picture browsing is lacking though...but this looks like the current best.

First, I mention that I have put a ".nomedia" file in my photos folder, to prevent this awful media scanner to perform its useless indexation (and drain my battery, and crash itself, ...).

Yes. I finally use "ES File Manager" + "QuickPic" as a viewer (because the less I launch "Gallery", the better I feel).

Is fast and convenient, but still shows's the leaf folders in a "flat mode" (or I missed someting). And show folders grayed if there's a ".nomedia" file on the path.

Won't show folders if there's a ".nomedia" file on the path.

Actually there's an option to honor or ignore the .nomedia

Here's the real reason you want to replace the stock gallery app: Image quality

"QuickPic" (previously known as "Picture Folder").
The number one reason is the way the stock gallery zooms - because it doesn't! Instead of zooming in on the actual image and reveal more detail, this one takes the super-lame approach and just zooms in on the full-screen image. It's like digital zoom on a camera - entirely pointless.

Have a look at the following screenshots (straight out of the phone - just resaved as jpg in quality 90). First up is the full image as shown in QuickPic:

Looks fine, right? Ok, then the same view in the stock gallery:

No real difference, yes. Let's see it zoomed in using QuickPic:

Looks quite alright for being max zoomed in on an image taken using the camera on my Galaxy S. Now, let's wrap things up with max zoom using the stock gallery app:

WTF? Who over at Google figured it was a good idea to release this and have people believe their cameras/displays/Android sucks? It can't be just my app which does this?

If you've read this far, I bet you're pretty interested in ditching the stock gallery, but what about QuickPic?

    • Image quality - there's a short delay at first but then it goes *sharp*.
    • Fast - QP caches the low-res files in System Media Store so browsing folders is a breeze.
    • Exclude folders - If you're fed up with folders showing album covers or game graphics, just exclude them and QP won't show them. You can hide them as well and QP will put a .nomedia file inside them if you want to instead.
    • So far it's available in English, German and Swedish (I did the latter).
    • Pinch-to-zoom (or zoom bar), share, crop, slideshow, copy and more.
    • Option to automatically turn screen brightness to max whenever displaying an image.
    • Option to rotate image based on proportions instead of using the accelerometer.
    (Requires Android 2.0 or higher.)

I dl'd QuickPic and it does look nice. Anyway to get it to sync with Picasa? I have been using 3D Gallery and it syncs with Picasa. I might have to try out Just Pictures as someone else suggested.

edit: ok JustPictures is awesome especially if you want to view photos from multiple places. You can link to Picasa, Flickr, Facebook, Photobucket and a couple of others. You can even set up a link to other people's flickr or picasa accounts (for ex. I have linked to my daughter's) and you can set up so that it notifies you when there have been a change to the acct. There is also a slideshow mode, pinch to zoom. It even gives you the name and date of photo in the flickr/picasa accounts. And once you sync the photos once, it is very fast loading especially compared to 3D Gallery. And it's free.

Yep, if QuickPic could work with FaceBook, Flickr and Picasa it'd be legendary! And I'd be willing to pay for it too.

Just downloaded QuickPic, it's really fast! I'd definitely recommend this app over the stock gallery one. Only problem I've run into so far is when I'm trying to set a picture for my contacts it force closes =\

I think you're talking about JustPictures. Ok, I found it. But now, it displays my music album arts. QuickPic doesn't do that (I don't know how).

Disrectory based ? It shows leaf folders in a flat mode (or I missed something).

I've suggsted true directory-based browsing to the developer of QuickPic and it might be added in a future release (No promises).

Mmmhh. I'm not sure. I also suggested it (yesterday) :

me> Allow to really navigate by folders instead of showing leaf folders in a flat mode

developer> QuickPic is a photo gallery, not a file manager, I just want the user can easy seek and view the photos on their devices, just like the stock gallery, but the stock is slow and lazy, as you known...

Great tip on QuickPic! I'm really digging it. If it only played animated gifs it would be perfect.

Having tried it am amazed at the difference in quality when you zoom in. This really is a must have or whats the point of these fantastic screens!

If I'm not mistaken - that's the same app which I compare to QuickPic in post #12 of this thread. Does zooming behave as lousily for you as for me or does it actually work?
