General Android OS- why so cryptic?

    I want to know what the LOST.DIR FOLDER IS, WHAT'S IT'S Purpose, and what is the significance of the (assigned to every file in the folder);. Date:
    December 31, 1979...? Specifically.
    If ANYONE KNOWS

    It contains files which were recovered during filesystem integrity checks when the system boots. Corruption of the filesystem can happen when, for example you pull out the SD card during a file write. So the LOST.DIR contains all the files which have become either corrupted, or disconnected from the filesystem in some way.
