Hi, I upgraded my S3 to the new software BUT now when I send a group text it converts the message to MMS so my EE provider charges me for this. Is there a way to make sure a group text goes through as an SMS rather than an MMS?

    Hi

I had the very same problem recently (see this thread) but have now solved it following the advice given there in last post (not counting my end one)

Go to Messaging, tap bottom left area to get menu
    Tap 'Settings' (pertaining to Messaging)
Scroll down to 'Multimedia message (MMS) Settings'
UNTICK 'Group messaging' - (send a single message to multiple recipients)

Don't ask me why; It doesn't make sense to me BUT, having done this, I can now send a message to multiple recipients as SMS! Give it a try. You'll see that, after you have entered a second recipient, it still stays as SMS and shows the number of characters you have left for the text

:) Hope this has worked for you too?

It makes perfect sense. Ticking the box says "make a group message an MMS".

The default, of course, since many plans include unlimited texts, but not unlimited data, is to make group messages MMS, which is data. That makes the carrier more revenue by default, which almost everyone leaves as-is.

Thanks guys. This seems to have worked :) However if I send a long text message it now converts this to MMS

Text Messages are limited to either 140 or160 characters. In settings you can select MMS alert and it will let you know when you get to the character limit to keep it from going MMS.

You can root install a ROM or mod framework that allows different values for an SMS. A little bit extreme perhaps, just to alter the size limit of a text.
