I've been getting tired of my droid lately. I also have doubt that we're gunna get the gingerbread update. So i was wondering how you guys are dealing wit it? and i was also wondering if i should root? Also, is there any possible way i could get a new verizon droid device, despite the fact that im not eligible for an upgrade?

root it, ROM it, it will feel like a whole new phone!! rooting has never been easier... just download Z4Root from the market and it is only one click away. also, gingerbread is still a distinct possibility. i do know that motorola is asking for some guinea pigs to test it out!

of course, as soon as it is released, we will be seeing custom ROMs built from the code, so it will be available one way or another even though it may never be made "official"

I am getting to that area too, but ROMing does help out.

I am running LFY 1.95 right now with the 1GHz SLV kernel.

I am thinking about picking up the Terminator once it comes out.

It hasn't been confirmed to be Gingerbread. Why would they be starting so early with Gingerbread if they were so late to the game with 2.1 and with Froyo?

Based on their "late to the game" track record, I'm saying this is probably 2.2.1, not the totally unreleased 2.3.

Root it, ROM it (D1 has the largest selection of ROMs), or install Launcher Pro and customize it like crazy. Its still one of the best "Google" phones around. No bloatware, no blur, and no UI running on top. I love my D1.

yes, it could be 2.2.1, but that would pretty much negate the need for the thread or his poll as most of the ROMs coming out now are already based on FRG83. why would you even consider unrooting to test out an OS that you can basically already use?

Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a possibility.

exactly why i started my last post with the words "yes, it could be 2.2.1"

guess we'll have to wait and see, but there have been several articles lately that have pointed to Gingerbread being a possibility on the D1. as always, i am skeptical about internet news, but i'd like to believe that it is out there.

If you're not rooted ... no wonder you're tired of it. :D

Having said that, I am starting to get emotionally prepared to replace my beloved DROID 1. But I'm not buying anything available today. To replace it now would be a waste, IMO. There's going to be some REALLY cool Android phones coming in Q1 of 2011 ... and they will be well worth the wait. Patience is really going to pay off for anyone who will wait just a few more months. CES International is just around the corner. ;)

I don't know... I think Motorola came close to making the perfect device (short of hardware specs). I mean, it's my phone, media player, movies, news, communications, my bedside alarm clock, my GPS Navigator: you name it, this thing just about does it all! New ROMs make it better and better. My wife is jealous of it. I can't imagine living with any other phone that doesn't do all these things.

And Messenger13 is right: NOTHING on the present horizon makes me slobber. Maybe the LG LTE superphone will be the shizzle... but can it do all the things the Droid can do? Doubt it.

If you're tired of your Droid, I respectfully suggest that you're not doing enough with it. Root that puppy and unleash the beast within... you'll never look back.

    1. Don't worry about it. Rumors are rumors. If I counted on every rumor that came through the rumor mills I'd feel bipolar from the upswings and downswings with each rumor and I'd probably be disappointed and unhappy like you. When there's an official announcement made I pay attention.
    2. Root and run custom ROM's.
    3. Use another launcher.
    4. Remember that I'm waiting for LTE and dual cores to make a worthwhile (IMO) upgrade.

Your call to make. Seems like waste to me that you're using one of the devices with the biggest modding community in the Android world and you haven't rooted it but, again, we can't tell you if it's worth it to you or not.

Sure. Pay full retail or go used.

"Later than the whiners wanted it to be" != "Late to the game" IMO. The release time from the point at which the source was released was completely reasonable IMO. I'm not sure where people get the idea that the update should be available as soon as the source is released. Such people should try developing and QA'ing code sometime.

Though, again, I don't bother getting worked up over rumors one way or the other. Gingerbread isn't a make or break item for me, again, because of the Droid's modding community. I haven't run an official release in ages.

I've had my Droid for over a year, and have watched each of MANY new (desirable) phones come out, but after all this time, I still don't feel like I'm missing much. (I'm rooted with 2.2.1). The Droid 1 screen is still outstanding, and due to its lack of dithering, displays everything more clearly than most current android phones, which do dither everything that goes to the screen.

At this point I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't wait for a 4G Droid (and for VZW's LTE network). From what the rumors and announcements proclaim, we only have a couple of months more.
