I have a Galaxy Note 4 that is rooted on 4.4.4

Recently, something that sounds like the Audio notification from Google Calendar is constantly sounding off at random times thru the day.

There is nothing in the pull down Notification panel to tell me what it is for. No apps seem to have alerts on them, Textra does not show anything, I have gone into Settings and turned OFF notifications for every app on the phone, and it still persists in giving out the audible dong dong sounds.

It is waking me up and forcing me to turn the phone off when I need to sleep.

This phone has been great for years, and now it is becoming a nuisance.

I use MacroDroid to turn off both DATA and WiFi, the internet is totally dead in the water. So, the only outside world contact possible is through Verizon's system.

Anyone else have this problem, and if so, how did you get rid of it?

I uninstalled the Google Calendar app and a couple of other apps that have not been used in years....

so far, no ding dong bells in my belfry.

turned MacroDroid back ON, I had turned it off at the same time I deleted Google Calendar.... so far, that has not rang my bell... :D

This is strange, Google Calendar has been on this phone for about two years....
maybe something changed the preferences.... I made a point of going to the website and removing all Notifications period. I will just rely on emails, for me, that is good enough.

    Sad Story.

Deleted Google Calendar, and MacroDroid, and today it went on a "Bong Bong" binge.... Every 20 minutes IF we were driving by a small town....
I live in a very rural area, just ranches for cows, hay, and horses....
but we took a 200 mile long trip to see friends

the phone was quiet until we got into a town/community/whatever you want to call localities with Internet and WiFi....

Hmmmm??? now what would a town have to do with my phone?
The DATA is turned off, the WiFi is turned OFF, both with MacroDroid.

Wonder if the WiFi receiver is still active and scanning?
about an hour's worth of digging turned up "yup", it is scanning, went into Settings/WiFi and turned OFF every thing period.....

The phone still works on WiFi when I want it to, but it has not uttered a beep since I strangled it.

I have put Google Calendar and MacroDroid back on the phone.

Then I went on a Dirty Sharks hunt, I uninstalled every app that has not been used in at least a year.... you can't imagine how much crap I had installed on that Note 4 in the last two years.....

Increased the free internal memory quite a bit...
    https://i.imgur.com/oUi0ojD.png

so far, so good, only about 3 hours of use since I did all that, but no bongos...
I hate extraneous noises.... at 75, I just will not put with young kids making a racket, or my phone doing things that I don't want....

I had already done that for the past two days, uninstalled Google Calendar and MacroDroid and the ding dongs continued.... they were both uninstalled during the trip today.... so I decided that those two apps had nothing to do with the situation, I need MacroDroid badly, as I use it for a lot of personal configurations....

Calendar is a "nice to have" feature, I can always use a laptop to check it out, but .... well, we like our cellphones to be better than a laptop. :)

it is now 10:30 PM here and about 8 hours since I went on a tear uninstalling all of the extra crap.... so far, no ding dongs.... but I have thought that before, and it starts up again on the next day. I am hoping that one of the "now gone" apps was responsible, or possibly it was the WiFi receiver hunting for a signal and making notifications that "I can hear something".... which I never want to hear.

If I want the WiFi, I will turn it on manually, or with MacroDroid and only when the screen is unlocked. I do NOT want the WiFi receiver running and wasting battery power when the screen is locked... that is totally pointless, I have no need for notifications from anything period... my off time is my own, I will not allow the internet to interfere with my personal "off time".... I have uninstalled FB Messenger from my phone, I hate that app. If I want to see what someone said, I will log into FB on a laptop and then read it.

sometimes, I really yearn for the days when the TELEPHONE was that gadget that hung on the wall in the Kitchen. if you wanted me, you called me, and if I happened to be in the house, and heard it ring, I would answer it.....

Today's generation just cannot understand someone not wanting to be bothered with the prattlings of little ones. or unwanted coupon sales people that think I need to buy a life insurance policy....

sorry for the long off the wall ramblings, at 75 years of nonsense in life, I want my personal quiet time.. and a phone that insists on going "ding dong" 20 times a day is not acceptable. IF, it was still stock, I would press Factory Reboot:

but it is rooted, and that would mess it up. I have no clue how to reinstall the root OS on the phone.... I bought it used, rooted on 4.4.4 on purpose so MacroDroid can turn off DATA and WiFi.

I remembered an app called "Greenify".... I think it is supposed to turn off needless apps when the screen is locked, at least that is my memory of it. it was deactivated, I reactivated it today. maybe that will help?

    I feel your pain...

There is an Advanced Wi-Fi notification setting which will notify when an open Wi-Fi is available.

Make sure this setting is disabled. It may override the MacroDroid macros.

    Just a thought...

Good luck and keep us posted on your adventure.

I am about to call Calf Rope!

I have never, ever, had my Android phones do this kind of crap... and I have been using them, and experimenting with them since the first smartphone landed on this planet.... I still have the very first one that I bought, and it still works. Super Crude piece of gear, and it is also a Samsung....

I went into Settings and turned OFF every notification there is.... especially in the WiFi section.

I tried to force it to quit scanning, nope, that don't work, it keeps scanning.
My ISP here is a joke.... we loose the internet and maybe it comes back in a little bit.... I am thinking that this is related to WiFi, but why in the heck is it going BONG BONG!!!

I am going to have to use MacroDroid set the Volume settings to ZERO in every channel while it is asleep..... The ringer will be the only channel that I leave open...

Today, after much diligent efforts, and uninstalling more unused apps, it still goes BONG BONG..... I think I heard it about 3 times.....

it is random, no rhyme or reason as to when it does it...

    EDIT: 12:50 AM
only a little over two hours, so not a good test.
I set MacroDroid to set all volume sliders to Zero except for the Ringer...

I have a macro that sets "Awake Defaults" when I unlock the screen, so all the volume levels return to normal... best I can do for now.

Will return here in a day or two and report if the bong bong is 'gone'... or just unheard anymore.

The thing is, there is never, ever, any posted Notification in the pull down screen.

All was quiet until 5 minutes ago.
I was trying to load a webpage and the browser "hung up"

at the same time, I heard my cellphone start to do the "BONG BONG" notification, but MacroDroid snubbed it so fast, that I just barely heard it.

I have on my Win7 desktop PC, a program called Network Uptime Monitor.
It is always running in the background, and when an outage occurs, it pops up in the middle of the screen.

Took a look at that, and "Proof of the Pudding", an outage occurred exactly at the same time that my laptop hung up loading a webpage.

So, now, why is the cellphone deciding to tell me with a BONG BONG every time it looses an internet connection? and it is always a WiFi signal, because DATA is turned OFF during these time periods. ( the phone is always asleep, and MacroDroid turns OFF both DATA and WiFi when the screen locks )

and to repeat, ALL Notifications on this phone are turned OFF.

    Frustration.

The BONG BONG came back in exactly 2 minutes.
That is the time period that all notifications on this phone will repeat if they are not acknowledged.
That bong bong was NOT silenced by MacroDroid for some reason, the first one was.??

I just set MacroDroid to mute all System Sounds period until the screen is unlocked.

Now I wait to see if that succeeds in muting the phone while it is asleep.

Sorry to get to this thread so late.

What you are looking for is under settings>accessibility and on Samsung phones only there's a notification reminder that for some God forsaken reason is ON by default. Turn it off and your sanity will slowly return.

What it does is give you a periodic audio notification with no other feedback if you have any unread notifications like email, texts, alerts, reminders, appointments ad nauseum. And it will continue until you read them all or throw your phone from the third floor window.

    @lunatic59
Thanks for that hint, I did look at that some time back,
but I have just gone there again and made a few minor changes that were different than I think they might need to be.

So, 13:30 hours today, will be waiting to "hear what happens" or not, which would be preferable.

Sorry for the big text, at 75 y/o I can't see the smaller fonts anymore. and that is after having two Cataracts repaired with brand new lenses.... my gosh, there is a world out there!!!

I had become so blind, that I quit driving and riding my motorcycle... now I can again.

Took a Screenshot of each change so I can find it again. :)

Well, 24 hours plus since I unchecked all those Accessibility items.

so far, it has been quiet again.... what a Blessing, and many thanks for pointing me there. I thought I had those turned off, but ?? who knows.

I am just glad that the nuisance is gone.
Google Calendar is back, and MacroDroid is doing its' thing.

a well received Positive note.. the battery life has improved drastically since I turned off the Accessibility settings.

the last two days with this phone are driving me stark raving crazy....

it was quiet for about 3 days and I thought it was under control.
I went into Google online with the PC and I turned off all notifications for every thing.

have done all of the hints suggested in this thread, and almost neutered the damn phone, and it has gone off 4 times since waking me up at 06:30 when I was going to sleep in late..... going to bed at 03;00 AM makes you want to sleep later........

I am at the point where I wish I could just reformat the phone, and install the OEM Verizon software.... But, it is a rooted phone....

I have no idea of what will happen if I try to return it to Factory Specs since it has a Definitive ROM in it.

I do know that when Verizon tried to push an update, it always fails.

    Well,
I decided to delete every app that has not been used in the last year.

FWIW, the phone is now on a 3 day Quiet Period,
    • No bongo drums
    • Battery life has tripled??? huh?
    • Downside, answering a phone call is suddenly very hard to do, Slide to the Right is very obstinate... Can't imagine why this occurred.
    • The only alerts I get now are for SMS messages.... Thank gawd.
    • Oh, since the phone is rooted, I decided to turn ON, Greenify. First time I have ever used it.... Maybe that helped the battery life?
Thanks to all who had suggestions.

Wanted to come back and report the problem "seems to be gone" now.

Absolutely nothing that was done in the way of "Settings" or deleting apps had any effect on the nasty Bong Bong Bong that just kept on and on and on.
This last weekend, it got so bad, it was driving everyone around me crazy, I had to turn the phone OFF.......

So, I was almost at the point of doing a Factory Reset but that has terrible implications for this phone, as it is rooted, and I have no idea how it was going to respond to such a drastic action. My fear was it would be bricked, as the code to bring it back to life as a Verizon branded phone is no longer on the phone.

But, I did find a setting that said "Reset to System Specs" and claimed that the apps would not be deleted. "Hmmmmm, never have seen that before"....

But, my Sysem Manager is a lot different than the one Samsung created, it is written by Definitive ROM and things are just different in a lot of places.... some of those differences are "good" and some aren't. depends on your perspective.

this one though seems to have fixed the phone,

    https://i.imgur.com/XJRtzks.png

no noises at all from it in the last 24 hours.
the downside though is that all of my personal settings disappeared.
some of them I recovered by using SuperBackup to restore things, like the Swype keyboard by SwiftKey.... that has years of history with me, it knows how I write, and can predict whole sentences for me... I was really bummed out when that quit working.... but SuperBackup restored it and I am pleased for the most part with a phone that actually does what I want again.

    https://i.imgur.com/7GdiQUc.png

thank you to Definitive ROM whoever you are. I bought the phone already rooted, so don't have a clue how that was done.

Add on another 48 hours and no Bongo Drums clashing in my head.

Additionally, I have noted some other features that are improved.
    • Battery life is longer somewhat.
    • Voice Speaking ability has returned, "Battery Full, unplug charger", others like that.
    • SwiftKey kybd crapped out totally, had to replace it with TouchPal which turned out to be a Blessing in Disguise, better app.
    • The speaker audio is better now, clear and no distortion.

So, somewhere, in the last few months, something happened to the operating system. how and why, I do not know.
No new apps installed that I can remember.
I have the paid version of SuperBackup installed and really like that. I was able to blithely unstall over a 300+ apps knowing that IF one of the is needed, it can be reinstalled easily. so far, only pulled back a couple of them, SwiftKey which no longer works, and CoPilot USA. for some reason, CoPilot would not reinstall, so went to PlayStore and downloaded it again Nice folks there, they honored my Paid License and let me download 2.58 gB of maps in one fell swoop.... it is better now than it was when I first bought it 10 years ago and I was still able to get the latest version for no additional charge.

So, unless something happens to the negative, I am probably thru updating this thread.
Kudos again the to Definitive ROM developers.... they have a new ROM out now for the Note 4 taken from the S7 phone....
Need to study that and see if I can install it.
