Static .gif images or animated .gif images?

I don't think a real reason has ever been mentioned, but the Android OS is unable to natively display animated .gif images. The same goes for Apple iOS as well, before anyone asks.

Are we talking about it playing on your phone or on the website? I have a few gif in my gallery, all animated and they work fine on my evo 2.2.

2.2 adds some animated GIF support. In older versions, there was literally no support at all. It would just display the first frame.
