Is there currently a work around for wifi tether on a Gingerbread based rom? I flashed the. 596 rom and wifi tether did not work. Thanks in advance!

No there isn't one that I'm aware of. The easiest work around is through big red though :p

I am also wondering if its possible. I downloaded one and it worked but then when done using it I close the program and try to use my dolphin browser it directs me to a verizon page offering hotspot. Only way to access my browser was to delete the tether program and reboot. I really want to use the wifi tether and I think its absolutely dumb to be charged an additional 20 dollars on top what I already pay for unlimited data.

As this topic has been discussed numerous times, not many people will want to comment on it, however there are alternatives, you can try pdanet its free and doesnt require root, if you want to use your phone as a modem, because of the tethering issues that have been discussed here thats all i would be obliged to tell you. though i had a post around here that a customer service rep from verizon was kind enough to answer, and i just quoted his answers, but he says vzw doesnt monitor you if you dont use alot of bandwidth, but if you go over 4-5 gb they start to watch, supposedly now.

Yes there is. The 3.0 wifi tether APK+ the "TBH" patch together will work.

There's a million threads about it so I don't especially want to get into it again. Needless to say, its against the TOS, so if you find those and want to tether, you do so at your own risk.

    To answer the OP...no.

Well, I just read an article on Phandroid this week stating that AT&T is threatening to move unlimited data customers to their 2GB/month $45.00 data plan (thus loosing their unlimited data plan) if they continue tethering via unofficial means. So, that tells me there is a good chance AT&T can tell if you are doing it with some work around. Plus, it was all over the forums a while back that with Gingerbread VZW can tell the same thing. I don't think it will be to long until VZW follows AT&T in this one and will start moving unlimited customers to one of the newer tiered plans IF they continue wireless tethering (if it is even still possible at some point on Gingerbread).

So, best answer, if you want to do wireless tethering, you're going to have to do it through VZW. I know, it hurts, but that is life :)

i had some quotes and links from the vzw cs that said that vzw is actually not monitoring it all, only those with high bandwidth uses

Not sure why this is such a touchy subject, but anyway the looks of that "TBH" frighten me. Saw a couple screenshots that describe what it does and that it could possibly "brick" your phone. I'll just continue to use PDA net. Works fine, less steps necessary to get it working.

and why should VZW support be trusted on this issue, when we are so quick to not trust everything else they say?

well so far the vzw cs rep thats been in here has a very good track record that steven can vouch for.

other users may have bad experiences with vzw cs reps, but i never have lol, i usually get what i want. mainly because i get my sister to handle the calls, and she gets what she wants

its not a matter of getting what you want...its the fact that CS reps have little to no idea about any of the inner workings of a company...ESPECIALLY something like whether or not VZW is tracking the use of tethering...that would be WELL above the pay grade of a CS rep...they work out of a playbook..

in all honesty...if they are tracking the data...why on Earth would they tell their CS reps who might blab to every Joe Schmoe and cause a ruckus??

thats why i only posted thats what the vzw rep said, its nothing that came from my fingers, only his/hers. and i am relaying the message to someone who wants to have wireless tether on their phone, whether or not they believe the CS rep is up to them, i for one do not care, because i dont tether.

in all honesty.. everything leaks out of vzw, so if we get info about certain things that stores themselves do not know or cs reps do not know then whats that mean? im sure there are multiple leaks within the company that cs reps do in fact know, and thats where our sources come from with leaks.

but thats my belief on the matter.

I used 11 GB on my phone last month and was a bit concerned, but nobody has contacted me about it yet. Hope it stays that way!

Hello Metfanant! I have been in Customer Care and in Technical Support with Verizon Wireless in the many years I've worked here and can't claim to have had any difficulty in getting my questions answered. While it is true that many aspects of our business are considered private or proprietary, transparency is still highly valued in our company.

To answer your question, though... Why bring our Customer Care reps in on our policy of data tracking and billing? Because Customer Care reps speak to the customer, and the customer needs to know what they can expect from VZW when we bill them. I hope that helps clear things up!
