In Los Angeles the fastest DSL serivce in my area is AT&T with 6gb, which is about a 510kbs download speed. My phone with T-Mobile with using the speedtest.net app is downloading at 620kb with 3G.
Should I give up my home DSL and tether from my phone instead? It's an unlimited plan. Would online video games work?
Would there be any problems doing this?

The only problem with that is that I hear that Tmo starts to slow down your data once you hit 5GB. If you can stay below 5 gigs of tethering on your computer while playing games and such then your set /sarcasm

No but seriously, since it reverts back to Edge after 5GBs then browsing would probably be annoyingly slow after that.
