Gmail address drop down list

When I start to enter an email address, I would expect it to show me a drop down list of all those names starting with the first letter I enter. However, it seems I have to enter two or three letters before it brings up choices. Is this the normal behavior and/or is there anyway to generate this drop down list immediately upon entering the first letter of the name?

I dont know if, or how it can be changed.
