Are there still issues with voice search?

It came loaded on my Skyraider ROM. It's pretty nice... lots of little improvements.

but if it came from the HTC Incredible, why did we not get it from HTC/verizon with the froyo update?

He said it came from ROMs. He's probably referring to ROMs cooked up by the dev community. Like I said, my Skyraider Incredible ROM came with it.

I'm not sure why this is now "news". Gmail 2.2.1 has been out and about since late July. Lots of folks are already running it on their Incredibles.

If 2.2.1 was not pushed out by VZW/HTC, and it was not updated via Market, then it's news to the vast majority of Incredible owners.

Wait was this supposed to come with the OTA Froyo? If so, I don't have it.

I have whatever the new Gmail is that came with Froyo and now one of my accounts does not sync as frequently. I used to get emails instantly but not I get them every 30 mins or so.

This has been around for a while now. It also has an easier method of replying so that you don't have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of each message.

This is not the gmail version that comes with froyo stock, that is only 2.2. You have to manually update to 2.2.1.

By that logic, it's still not news as it still hasn't been pushed out by VZW/HTC and was not updated via Market. These are just links to random places to download the 6 week old 2.2.1 Gmail.apk.

So is this Gmail.apk a newer version than 2.2 or not?

mine seemed like it updated when I received Froyo, looking in application management I have version 2.2 and looks very similar to what is shown in the various links to this 2.2.1, is there indeed a difference?

Yes, but it hasn't been released on the Market. The version floating around was extracted from a ROM for a different device (perhaps the EVO, can't recall exactly).

It includes some nice new features, but some have reported problems with certain voice functions (e.g. Note To Self).

So the big question is does this version let you download attachments (since prior versions have inexplicably left this functionality out) without having to have a 3rd party app installed?

    *crosses fingers*

I loaded this up this morning and was able to download an attachment directly from the Gmail app and I was also able to copy paste. Although I'm not impressed with the Copy Paste integration in this build. You have to hit the menu button, more settings, then select text and you then just touch and drag on the email where you want to copy. It's not very accurate and isn't the same as the copy paste feature in other places throughout the phone. Ehh, you think Google which makes the android platform would have a properly functioning Gmail application especially since you basically have to have a gmail account to use this phone. Whatever...

Copy-Paste is huge for me, it's why I have to use the HTC mail app.

Do you use HTC Mail for Gmail? If so, how do you prevent it from doubling your contacts? I used HTC Mail when I first got my Incredible, but got annoyed by the double contacts and notifications error (would keep playing notification sound over, and over, and over).

    Thanks.

I like it. Having reply at the top versus all the way at the bottom is a huge improvement.

I don't see a big difference with this version over the stock froyo gmail. Copy and paste is exactly the same.

Yeah, only new addition I saw was the floating Reply (which still takes two presses).

I went back to HTC Mail for now.
