Help gmail does not honor notification setting GB

i have a droid x with gingerbread installed.
from the inbox screen i do the following:
press menu -> more -> settings
press my account
in the "Notification settings" section i set "Email notifications" off

when i turn sync on, i still get a beep and menu notification. how do i prevent this from happening? i want to get email but i don't want to know about it. my corp email works this way.

Open Gmail and set the settings.

Menu > More > Settings > Tap the account you want > Change "Email notifications" to "off."

Each app has individual notification settings.

that is exactly what i did.
i turned notifications OFF and i still get notified.

That's odd, you don't have another app that might be interfering, do you? "Gmail notifier" or a similar app?

When you go back into the settings after turning it off, is it staying off or is it turning back on again?

haha! no problem. i do that all the time.

so yes, it turns out i do have gmail notifier installed. i must have installed it awhile ago and forgot all about it.
