Help Gmail not getting Mail

Just received the Droid X a few days ago and went through the standard setup with my existing gmail account. All worked fine for a few days but now I notice that I get no notification of any type for new mail unless I manually press the sync button.

I thought that the gmail was a push like SMS and as soon as new mail arrives it notifies me (yes notifications are on). Any ideas?

I just tested it by sending an email from my work address to gmail. Nothing on the phone but it does show if I log in via a regular computer.

disregard total noob here. I put the power widget on one screen and turned all of the options off to conserve batter - not realizing one was the sync that got the mail.
