Try clearing data, then force stopping through manage apps. I've had it happen a few times, had to repeat the same steps over and over and it finally works, gets to be annoying, but it seems in the end persistence pays off. Also clear Gmail storage.

I seem to have this problem when I have WiFi on, I toggled it and the issue went away. I'm waiting for 2.1 to see if that resolves it before I dig around any further on it.

I used to sometimes have this problem with a G1 running Android 1.6. A friend also sometimes had the same problem on an HTC Magic running Android 1.6. The problem doesn't appear to have happened to me since running Android 2.1 on my HTC Desire.

Follow this to fix Gmail not sending.

I have a similar problem with my droid eris, only the gmail actually gets sent but still appears in the "outbox" I have to manually "sync" for it to go away.

The last two days I am not able to send email through Gmail on my Xeperia X10.
Is that an issue related to Android 1.6?
Is there any other solution than clear cache and storage?
I can't believe that I am having a problem sending email through Gmail using Android!

This is the fix which I came with up on my Android to work around this bug:

    1. Open Label Outbox

    2. Select original offending message.

    3. Scroll down to end of message and select Reply and then Save draft.

    4. Close Outbox and open label Drafts.

    5. Open email and there is your unsent message which can now be sent, copied or discarded!
