Root Good source for Info??

Why am I having a hard time finding a good source on step-by-step process of rooting my wife's droid and installing a custom ROM?

I've tried search, nothing. YouTube videos say I need some easyroot tools from the market but I don't find them when i search.

Her phone is severely acting up and I'm trying to root and put a better ROM on there for her, but for the life of me...am getting lost and frustrated.

Please help.

The easiest way, in my opinion, to root your Droid is to use this method: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...oid-without-rsd-lite-up-including-frg22d.html. However, this is an easy method as well: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...olution-droid-thread-d-d-latest-v2-0-4-a.html. Just make sure you read carefully on both methods.

Thanks.

There is a lot of good info in that guide. Read through it and you will learn everything you need to know.

I found both of you helpful. Thank you. I got her rooted and new ROM installed, just failed to save her contacts...so I'm restoring the backup to do it all over again.

Check you other thread about this issue before you resort to a nandroid backup. I'm sure we can troubleshoot this and get it fixed without needing to restore a backup.

This is from the post about roms,

"
  1. DL ROM from wherever and put it somewhere that you can access in Recovery easily (SD Root is good)
  2. DL. rename to identify, and place kernel somewhere easy on SD as well (SD Root is good) "
Can some1 clarify what SD root is and where it can be found.

----------------------------------
"!!Navigate to "Nandroid"

I will see this in the recovery setup when I boot the phone?

--------------------------------
"Use Rom Manager to backup and name it something descriptive"

Is this the "backup current rom" option in ROM Manager?

Yes. You can use that option to backup your current state ROM. I suggest using very descriptive file names. I typically use the following format example: "UD-1.0.0-gold-theme-chevy-1.1-kernel-before-LP-update-change-10-29-2010-16.37.12.zip"

By including as much info as I can in the description, I am able to easily differentiate which backups are which.

Ty for the reply. Sorry if I'm asking obvious stuff but I want to be sure I am prepared for what I'm getting into. If its not too much trouble could some1answer my other 2 questions also. Thanks

My appologies. I totally missed the first two questions of yours.

The root of your SD card simply refers to plugging your phone into your computer, mounting your SD card (using the pull down menu on your phone), and opening your SD card on your computer. Most computers are set up to scan the card and then ask you what you want to do (ie play music, browse files, etc) and you can just select browse (or open) files. Then, you see a long list of folders and maybe some files. That is the root of your SD card. Basically it is the highest level of your card. (Does that make sense? LOL... )

Yes, when you boot to recovery, you will see an option for "nandroid". When you select that option, you will see "backup", "restore", and "advanced".

Hope that answered the rest of your questions. If you have any more, let us know. We're here to help.

Ok I've hit a early snag. Need opinions. So far I have done the inital backup of my original setups. Now I have tried to dl the ss rom by Chevy via the paid rom manager program. When I do this it freezes in the dl manager 2wice now. It freezes on "SS blue theme 1 of 4" should I just dl it to my computer first then put it on my SD card? Or keep trying to dl it via the rom manager....

To expand the one in rom manager comes with the kernel and theme so if I can't do it that way I'm not sure how to find and install the theme and kernel.

ok so i got the dl to work threw the ROM Manager. I rebooted in safe mode but dont see a Nandroid option. What am I doing wrong? As far as I know I have done eveything to the letter..

Here are the options I am given in recovery mode
-----
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe baseband data
----

No Nandroid option.

Where am I going wrong?

Are you sure you have a custom recovery? Those look like the options on the stock recovery of the Droid. Go back into ROM Manager and flash Clockwork Recovery, and try again.

Perfect was looking for something like that and was failing hard. All is good right now and Chevys setup rocks. The "york" I think theme that chevy has packaged with the SS d/l is awesome. Im all blued out =). Temps are staying very low. Im thinking of going to the next kernel up from the 1.0 now.
