google calendar app alerts & notifications

i think i just confused myself.

in the calendar app, under settings, you can "set alerts & notifications". now an alert is sound and/or vibrate, while a notification is a message displayed in the status bar at the top, correct?

howcome you can't set an alert AND a notification in calendar? is that just how it is or am i forgetting something?
