Google Calendar Sync Dates

My online google calendar is populated with events over the past few years. I bought the phone a few weeks ago and it only appears to sync the last 2 months to the phone (with the exception of repeated events such as birthdays which appear beforehand). How can I extend the period synchronised as I need to check up on the date of past events quite often?
