My phone seemed to be using a lot of my months quota of data without me actually doing anything. I thought it may have something to do with google collecting location data in the background so turned off 'use wireless networks' in location settings. This seems to have fixed the problem but is there a way of having this setting enabled so the phone only uses 3G when in an application rather than using my data usage without being in any particular programme?

I added the widget to turn off mobile data (long press on homescreen to add then -> widget -> settings -> mobile network) so that I can specifically choose when to turn this on and off.

Since doing this, I've added 3G watchdog to check my data usage and I've only used 2.63MB in the last week (not sure if it was using anything prior to that, I've only had it two weeks and I'm almost always in a free WiFi spot).

I'm using well under 10MB a day, which means that in normal usage I'm using less than 10% of my T-Mobile 3GB allowance, meaning I have loads spare for big usage days if there are any.

Drove into London (Finsbury Park) this afternoon and back, the return journey split into two sections, each routed separately by Google Navigation, totalling 60 miles, and included some re-routing because I missed a couple of turns! Including some mail downloading, total data usage was 4.5MB.

Last week I drove 200 miles and the total data usage was just under 10MB, including some Facebook photo uploading, Web, and mail use.

Even if you have a measly 500MB/month plan, you've got over 15MB/day and I don't think I have ever got near to that in one day. After 24 days of use total mobile data use is 165MB, or an average of just under 7MB/day, or just over 200MB/month.

Might be doing a 300 mile round trip to the West Country next week, with lots of individual segments, so that will really test the data usage. Will report back after that!

Last Saturday we drove from Hertfordshire to Bristol and back via Bath. It was 280 miles in all and I planned half a dozen routes, from 130 miles to just a few miles each. I left mobile data on all day and didn't use wifi. So my Desire was downloading my GMail, I did some web browsing and the rest of the time it was running Google Navigation, including downloading photos at the end of routes, etc. We did re-route a few times to avoid the monotony of the motorway and I missed turns a few times. I also uploaded some photos from the camera to Facebook. Total data usage (both ways) for the day was 18MB. I reckon about 15MB of that was navigation, so that works out at about 18-19 miles per megabyte of data. My plan allows an average of 100MB use a day, so there is really no problem. Even on a 500MB/month plan you get 16MB/day on average, so although you might max out on one day, you'd make this up by lower usage on other days.

Another point of interest was thet the car charger worked faultlessly. On a previous trip on a very hot day in a car with u/s aircon I noticed the charger failed to charge the phone after it over-heated, resulting in a steep discharge. I had Bluetooth on this time as well. So as long as the phone can be kept cool the charger is OK.
