Google Maps and KML [How To]

So I made a KML file on Google Earth on my computer and wanted to put it on my phone so I could use my GPS to follow my path. After much searching, I came upon a post on Yahoo answers and found that it works flawlessly.

Now I don't know if this has already been posted (I did search) but I decided it might be helpful to some.

If you have a lot of KML files that you need to be able to view on Maps on your phone, make a Webs.com account. After creating it (does not need to be aesthetically pleasing), go to upload files. Upload your KML file and after doing so, go to Maps on your phone. Now go to search and using "http://" type the website including the file (ie: http://NAME.webs.com/FILE.kmlhttp://NAME.webs.com/FILE.kml). It should show up. To see how it works, try going to Maps on your phone right now and searching without quotes "http://getracks.webs.com/tracks/st.kml" It is a path I made of a loop I sometimes ride on my dirt bike.

What I would really like to see is a true cloud integration between the desktop Google Earth and Maps to the mobile Maps and Earth. I mean it has to be completely transparent.

I couldn't agree more. It really confuses me as to why Google links everything except Maps and Earth.

I would love to see full KML support in the app! I've put KMLs on my personal server which is a big enough pain to have to do, but I've found that GE for Android only supports the most rudimentary, simple KML files. It won't open my main file from GE Desktop, or even my map of the Chicago CTA system.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I got here via a search, and there's an easier way to import KMLs into maps. I just wanted to let anybody who gets here to know that.

The method of action is explained in this article.

The article isn't up to date, and Google Maps has somewhat changed, but the essence of the actions is the same -- go to Google Maps website -> hit "my places" -> "create map" -> then hit "import" and load your KML.

Once the track is saved into "my places" it can be loaded in Android's Google Maps via the layers.

If only there was a totally offline method.

You can have areas of Google Maps offline, and the kml is local, so (providin the kml is for a location within the area of the offline Google Maps data), it would be nice to be able to access the kml.

One can then prepare info before traveling abroad and needing local data access for Google Maps OR servers with the kml file.

Anyone any ideas?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but this is EXACTLY what I'm trying to do. I setup a custom map online with a bunch of pins to points of interest that I wanted to see and other info (like airport location, hotels, car rental place, etc). I loaded the map in Google Maps then made it available offline only to discover none of that data is downloaded, you only get roads with the offline map.

All I want to do is have a nice map with points of interest on my phone that I can view without an internet connection. To make matters worse, the offline map functionality temporarily went away with the latest Google Maps update so you have to run an old version to even get offline maps, nevermind even trying to get My Places onto your phone.

Have look at 'Maps With Me' :)
The app has offline maps, offline search and its own setting and managing of points of interest.

But you can import Google POIs as KML files :)
I tried this successfully with POIs of Google Earth as KML file.
