Anyone know if there's a way to explicitly have the google maps app download some maps?

I'm about to go on a trip where I suspect I'll either be out of cell phone range, or be on roaming data ($$$). I'd rather just turn off the cellular radio, and have google maps up with the GPS, but not sure how possible it is.

    Has anyone tried this?

    Thanks.

Here is a failing of the device. Even if you didn't require GPS in your request, one option might be to download the images of the maps you need and email them to yourself and/or try the MyMaps feature. But in both cases email and MyMaps appear to need a data connection.

Your best option is to probably download the maps as images to your sd card and view them in your gallery. Not a very sexy solution.

    Hmm.. ya.

Well bummer, I was hoping I could flip off the data connection, but still have the GPS up and use it to jsut tell where the hell we are :)

I was willing to accept leaving the Google maps at the current zoom level (since I know it'll try to pull better quality maps as you zoom in). I wonder if the GPS "My Location" overlay on Google Maps app even works sans data connection.

I'll tinker a lil, but I may end up doing jsut as you suggested.

Report back how you end up doing it. Maybe, bing, mapquest, mapblast, yahoo maps might even offer a better "offline option" for those that plan on needing some offline maps.

This is seriously lame. I was in the Yorkshire Dales last week where there is no coverage at all. I suspect the GPS would have worked just fine but it's pointless without an internet connection. I should go back to my old Nokia N73 that had TomTom installed with maps cached locally.

I wouldn't mind paying for a product on Android either that cached maps rather than having to rely on the internet which could likely be nonexistent in some circumstances but frequently slow.

    1) I don't know what I'm talking about, I have never used GPS mapping on any sort of phone

    2) Have you tried OpenStreetMap? There is bound to be an Android app for that, and with OSR you can download maps.

GPS on the G1 via Google Maps has been amazing. I love it.

I searched for Open Street Map and had no luck in the Market. Any links or ideas where we might find it?

    See 1) :D

Having said that, another thread suggests that searching for CoPilot Live should be fruitful. I don't know if it's worth
