Help Google Play 'Checking for updates'

I've just factory reset my mother's Hudl 2, set it back up again and now Google play is stuck at 'Checking for updates'. I have not installed any other apps yet & the internet connection is fine, I have also power cycled.

Play Store version is 7.9.80, compared to my Hudl 2 which works fine which is at 7.9.34

Any help appreciated.

Check the Hudl's date and time are correct in Settings, especially as you've factory reset. If those are wrong Google Play can't connect.

Good point thanks but yes it is correct.

I'm beginning to think it's the version of Play store that's not right i.e. it's too new a version, that's the main difference between the Hudl I've reset & one that works fine.
