google smtp issues

My dad is travelling and I'm setting up his new samsung tablet for him. Since he's out of network he can't use his ISP smtp server. I found out that you can use the google one (which I set up) but some issues:

1-it asked me to create a public key (which I did)
2-now every single time he sends an email it asks for the password to the public key. It wouldn't send the email if you don't want to use the key.

This is really not very optimal and really quite annoying to type in a password every single time (there is no way to save the password).
Did I do something wrong?
What settings should I be using to use the SMTP server? The emails are sending, just with this issue.

Hi crossmr,

I have a number of 'other' mail accounts set up so that I can send through gmail but I don't have the problem you identify. I suspect we have used a different method.

I set my other accounts up from within my gmail account (you have to use a PC/Laptop to access the full settings):-

Settings/Accounts and Import/Send mail as:/Add another email address you own

There are certain requirements that your email account should meet, found in Learn more.

It works well for me with the mail sent using the original account name and replies go to that account.

You can also set gmail to 'fetch' mail from your other account so that you can handle it all through your gmail account using the gmail app on your phone/tablet.

Hope this helps.

:)

Thanks, I'll try that and see if it works. Really annoying to be setting this up on a tablet only though... doing so results in a really unpleasant experience.

Hi crossmr,

This may or may not help, but I have just set up one of my orange.net mail accounts in my stock mail app with standard orange POP settings and gmail SMTP settings as follows:-

username : my @gmail.com address

password : my gmail password

server : smtp.gmail.com

security : SSL

port : 465

and it sends mail via the gmail server with no problem, as well as downloading from the Orange server as normal. A slight problem is that the send address is the gmail address which is why I prefer to use the 'send as/fetch' combination which provides address integrity within a conversation. There is a workaround whereby you can change the default send address, but if you are using it for more than one email address it becomes complicated.

:)
