A patent protects an inventor from others trying to use the same method of accomplishing a task. It doesn't speak to intention. There would also be some pretty steep legal hurdles to get through before anything like this could be accomplished. Google could be the bad guy in this for looking into such a project, or they could ultimately be the good guy by patenting it and keeping it from some other less well meaning entity. Just filing a patent doesn't tell us much at all. That any ad company wants as much data as possible on the people viewing their ads (victims?) isn't much of a surprise. The object has remained the same for as long as there's been advertising, only the technology changes.
