Googlemail to Gmail

Changed my account to Gmail as it's easier to type but now don't get email to the Google Mail client on my Desire. Tried to remove the account but it won't let me as it's linked to the phone. How can I swap it over without resetting the phone (I'll do it if need be but would rather not)

Log into your inbox, go to settings>accounts and at the end of your current email address it has a link 'switch to gmail?' just click that...

ETA: But now I have the same problem as the OP. It works OK on my PC - just not on my Desire.

Have you guys tried changing your email to gmali.co.uk in the phones sync settings?

Edit:
Just changed to Gmail.com and only way to change it on the phone without factory reset is to add it as a aditional google account and then untick the sync options on your googlemail account. Then it will only sync with the gmail account.

Yeah did find out the reset but didn't really wanna do that as I'm using Outlook 2010 and HTC Sync won't sync with it...luckily I've got Outlook 2007 on my other PC so will do that and reset the phone...bah!!

You dont need to reset if you do what I said. Just add the gmail version as a 2nd account to the phone and then untick the original googlemail account to get synced.

I don't want the other account there as it doesn't sync it's calender, only contacts and email...I'm just gonna back up my phone and start again - not many apps in use as I keep it as stock as possible...

I want to change back to googlemail (I think it's causing me problems), and Google says

No problem. You can change your address back to @googlemail.com by going to the "Accounts" tab under Gmail Settings and clicking the "Switch to@gmail.com?" link under "Send mail as:" (this link will only show up if you're eligible to change your address).

No link shows up, so why am I not eligible? Is there another way to change it?

EDIT: changing to gmail stops you accessing the market.
Does it really matter as you can use the account as googlemail.com or gmail.com, both work on the same account. So the phone main address/id based on googlemail still functions. You could just sync contacts and calender on the main googlemail address and then add the gmail to the other email app.

It does to me, because I found that I can't download from the App Market unless my primary email is googlemail.

hi ive just changed to gmail and had the problem, however i think i may have sorted it, i changed the account settings in the mail app, i changed the email address to gmail and it seems to work ok, just gotta wait for an email to see if it worked

i dont think this works as i cant seem to download from the market anymore

its downloading from the market now, so hopefully its working with gmail

After switching to gmail you can't access the market and you get an error about google voice authentication.

So either go back to googlemail or factory reset.

I went with factory reset and started another thread about backup/restore.

I've changed mine and did a factory reset but it doesn't seem to be able to find my Google calendars. Anyone else had this?

I've renamed the calendar to gmail and cleared data as per this: Troubleshooting sync - Google Mobile Help

EDIT: Deleted the calendar and suddenly it works.
