I have my phone completely naked and have dropped it TWICE from 3 feet onto concrete. The corners of the plastic are a little scratched/dented but the screen is fine. Absolutely no scratches and I keep it in my back pocket. Don't know how some of you are taking care of it yet getting scratches.

like the last post mentioned, it would be wise to actually follow the link in the first post. the company that makes gorilla glass claims they are making the glass for the galaxy s line, they seem to be a decent source of info as they actually make the stuff and are aware of who they sell to

Scratching the screen with your keys is harder than you think. Small scratches that look like hairs will form if you don't have a protector on it. I've actually tested mine after doing some damage to it on accident and my best guess is that these small scratches are actually from dust and other small particles.

I work in a machine shop and constantly have at the very softest 304 stainless steel chips in my fingers, most commonly very hard tool steels. I waited a full day, until I could get a droid x screen protector since my local att store didn't have anything for the captivate, to use my phone. I also put a piece of coffee filter over the rear speaker because steel shavings completely destroy phone speakers.

Perhaps you should read the spec sheet, msds, and user manual, before making personal attacks?

Please point to any documentation that says the screen is not Gorilla Glass.

I admit I don't know the answer, and the press release is vague. Engagdet.com has read more into this and thinks that all US Galaxy S phones have Gorilla glass.

In multiple threads you reference the spec sheet and manual - but these are not detailed design documents. All they say is tempered glass - they don't say what chips or type of metal and plastic make up the phone either.

Motorola is using Gorilla Glass, but not calling it out in spec sheets on every phone that has it.

I agree that there is little evidence the phone has it, but there is even less evidence that it doesn't have it. All these phones are Galaxy S models, the i9000 is the international, and we know the US varieties. The press releases do indeed imply that all the phones have Gorilla Glass.

Additionally the glass is laminated to the OLED display and thinner then glass in LCD displays - all this points to evidence of Gorilla Glass - it would not make sense to have 2 different display manufacturing lines and standard glass in a thinner package may be to fragile.

If you are going to prove your point, then you better have proof that is less vague and more believable then references to spec sheets and manuals that don't have any real details.

Pull in your horns please everyone, before things get to the infraction stage.

The evidence is there in post #27, so unless anyone has proof to the contrary I'd say it's "case closed". Companies tend to get into serious legal trouble if they issue false press releases.

exactly what I was thinking Slug, Corning wouldn't release this if it were untrue, and of course, lets say they really were committing business suicide, Samsung would defiantly have come out to deny it right away. This isn't a small company from the midwest looking for their 10 minutes of fame in the press, they are a name that is familiar enough that the headline alone gets hits.

regardless, im screen protector free and man does this screen look so much better without the orange peel effect that invisible shield gives it

I noticed that the press release came out almost exactly three months (one day off) after the release of the iPhone 4. I wonder if the delay of this announcement was the result of some deal that Corning had to make with Apple.

    Funny, thanks :)

I actually got his email reply now. He says he thinks he is on vacation in Martha's Vineyard but he is not really sure, Google Earth behind that supposedly Gorilla Glass says he is floating in space somewhere around the planet.

My question is whether this is a production change, or if Gorilla had been incorporated since inception. I find it odd that Samsung wouldn't have touted such a feature from the beginning, and that so many people have complained about having scratched their displays with little effort. Whatever mine is made of, I love the phone and appreciate the awesome support community! :)

Can't agree with you more. Mine is one of those scratched, and I do not really care at this point, no phone I ever had remained unscratched for too long. I am actually lucky I have not dropped my Captivate yet :) A phone is a phone, it scratches, dents and shatters, who cares. My own freaking glasses have more scratches at this point than my phone and that should be more concerning to me.

Samsung has confirmed on their Facebook page that it is indeed Gorilla Glass.

Maybe you have just scratched the oleophobic coating, not the actual Gorilla glass itself.
