Got the itch last night and picked up a Droid. After 1 days of use I am glad I got it. Moto has really turned around their product line with this. Even better my Nexus One sold 15 min after posting it on ebay! Any must haves that I should install on this?

Must have not liked it, if you sold it on Ebay 15 minutes after you bought it :D

I would root it right away :p. I got my Droid two weeks ago, but over clocking just to 800 was definitely worth it. Things run much smoother all around, like they were meant to.

Overclocking won't burn up the hardware or void my warranty?

You can check temp with the TempMonitor application to make sure nothing runs too hot. It will void your warranty in the same way Jailbreaking does the iPhone, but the Sholes app (Sholes) makes resetting to no root very easy.

Check out the Root Forum, it covers everything, All Things Root (Droid) - Android Forums

    In my opinion...
Handsent SMS (or some other alternate SMS app)
    Astro File Manager
Google Voice - free visual voice mail
    Pure Calender Widget
    Astrid - Task/Todo List
    Home+ home screen replacement
Car Dock Speakerphone - defaults to speakerphone in Car Dock mode
    TV.com - free streaming TV
Nesoid - NES emulator, can play most old school Nintendo games!
Meridian - much better media player then stock
Weather Widget (pay version) - Has a flip clock/weather widget similar to the HTC Sense widget. You have to get the pay version for this.

Technically you're not supposed to root it... and overclock it above what is already stock. Whether it is covered by warranty or not, I can't say. You should look at the insurance fine print and if it doesn't say then you're good--the Verizon rep told me their insurance covers everything, but a nuclear bomb.

It for text messaging. MUCH better than the stock Droid app. Allows you to speak your text messages instead of typing them. Also, it can speak your messages to you and it has a few themes to choose from for display. This is probably the most popular sms app out there.

    2. Some kind of battery life widget.
There are several to choose from. They offer a homescreen widget that displays the battery life. Just do a search in the Marketplace for "Battery" and select the one that you like the most. Make sure to check the comments so that you dont download one that sucks.

    3. Some kind of home theme app.
There are a few to choose from. Home++ and Pandahome are very popular. I use Home++. It will allow you to have 7 home screens and horizontal orientation. The best one is Sweeterhome, but the newest version is still in beta, so you might want to wait till they release it on the Marketplace.

    4. Beautiful Widgets
Has some handy widgets for Vibrate, Silence, WiFi, etc... Also, it has a beautiful weather widget that displays the time, date, and current weather. It has a future weather display that is even cooler.

    5. Ethereal Synthesizer
This is just a cool app that plays different tones when you touch the screen. Will make you smile!

    6. Pic Say
Allows pinch to zoom for photos. However, the 2.1 update is supposed to have this feature so Pic Say wont be necessary anymore.

    7. Screen Test
Will show you if any of your Droid screen pixels are burnt out.

    8. Some kind of flashlight app.
I use Droid Light. It will light up the camera flash and is very bright!

    9. Other fun apps....
    G1 Psycho
    SchottGun

A lot of it depends on what you want to do and what you are using your phone for.

I rather like Audiobooks it is free and allows you to download and listen to 1000 of audio books in the public domain.

Ringdroid allows you to make and easily assign your ringtones. Also free.

    3. This is actually a media player called cubed, but it shows up as a superscript 3 (cubed) in the market. Search for Rockon to find this, but click on the 3. Again free.

Documents To Go. The free version allows you to view Excel and Word files. You can upgrade and actually edit files if you so desire. I've been pretty impressed with this. It is actually quite responsive and quick.

Robo Defense. Not sure if you are looking for games, but this is one addictive game. The demo is free, but if you are like me you will go back and upgrade.

I have quite a few others, but these are the ones that really stood out in my opinion.

Google "NES ROMS" to find links to game Roms (the actual game). Save the Roms on you SD card and away you go. I would give you a link to the sight I like to use but I believe they frown on giving links to possible copyrighted software.

VZW insurance doesn't cover any custom mods but who cares. Root that bad boy.

    As for apps,

    Gameboid- GBA emulator
Rev3remote- If you like Revision 3 shows, like the totally rad show, diggnation and digg reel. I personally love it. haha.
    Pandora- Music streaming
Homerunbattle3d- Homerun Derby game. it's really fun.

    Here's my list:

    1Cast

3 <<<< to find this, search for rockon, but DO NOT download rockon... instead, download the app labeled "3", which will be third down (I think) in the results listing. This is definitely a "must have" app... trust me

    Backgrounds

Beautiful Widgets (paid app 99 cents I believe)

Brightness Toggle Widget (by developer CurveFish)

    Cache Mate (must be rooted)

    Cherry Rplayer

    DirecTV

Documents To Go Full (paid app)

    FMyLife Official

Handcent (change your thread background pictures to make it really awesome).

    i Music

    Labyrinth

    Life Stories

    Mobile Defense

    Movies

    Mini Info

    Pandora

    PdaNet

    Radiant

    Ringdroid (awesome)

    Seesmic

    SetCPU (must be rooted)

    Sim Checker

    Superpages Mobile

White Noise OR Lightning Bug OR Sleepy Time

    Wi-Fi Tethering (must be rooted)

SM Updater (but do not install the 2.1 launcher if you flash their ROM)

    Tech Buzz (awesome widget)

    TempMonitor (root only)

    The Weather Channel

    TV.com

    Wertago

    Where

    Where's My Droid

    WordUp!

    Yelp

    Zedge

I could list more, but these are the ones I think have universal appeal.

I heard that NESnoid and SNESnoid didn't work so well without a physical keyboard. True or not true?

i dont use a app killer, the phone runs fine, if not better without it, killing the apps does nothing really, they end up starting again, taking up the same amount of memory, there is an article somewhere on the web stating it does more harm than good, but i cant remember where it is, and for the droid, an app killer isnt even needed, its fast enough, once you root and rom with a side of oc, a talk killer is pointless, but thats just me

Not bad at all and it is FREE! It is made by CBS so it is only neworks they own like CBS, CW and Cnet. Has full length episodes of Star Trek: TOS under classic TV.

New update just added on screen buttons. You might have to go into menus to turn them on. Older version required physical buttons but I like using on screen buttons better.

On a side note, my first post listed "Home+". It should have been Home++. The market has a hard time finding it if you do not put in both + signs.
