Hello. I have a Samsung S7 SM-G930F running Android 8.0.0, Kernel 3.18.91-19497840-QB34227861.

I often disable then enable GPS before using Maps so I can save battery so GPS doesn't constantly update location when I'm driving but have no need to use GPS.

I'm wondering on my version of Android, does the GPS goto sleep or a mode that has negligible battery use when you exit the Google Maps app or aren't navigating anywhere ?

Currently I use "Battery Saving" mode.

Is it worth to make some sort of script or custom firmware that can turn location off when Maps is not in use or exited back to the home screen ?

Thanks

Simply having the GPS radio enabled doesn't really use any power unless an app is actively polling for a precise location fix. It's not like Bluetooth which constantly scans for devices in range. GPS is completely idle until it's being used by an app.

Tasker may be able to automate it but I'm not sure it's really worth the effort. In fact, Tasker checking for conditions may wind up using more power than the idling GPS would.

that's a good point about tasker.....and i agree with about gps......i just wonder if it affects the s7 more being it is pretty old by now and does not have a removable battery.
