    I'm stumped.

When it's searching are you using anything that requires GPS at the time?

Searching for satellites perhaps? Especially if you are in concrete building and you have left gps enabled.

GPS enabled won't make it search unless you have an app using it (I've left mine enabled for the last 3 years).

Of course if you are logged in to Latitude, or have any other app that wants your location and can use gps running in the background that would do it.

Not that i can find. I went to every app that I thought could be requesting gps signal and turned it off and its still doing it. On my iphone there was only one gps switch fof locagion services on here there is 3 of them. Why is that? System, verizon and google.

A system setting will disable gps globally, so no app can use it (should be separate switches for gps and cellular location I'd have thought?).

Some apps have options to use gps or not, or to use your location or not. This lets you manage your power better (eg I leave gps on so Maps can use it, but don't need my clock widget checking my location, and tell Tasker to just use cell tower id to save power at the cost of precision). I guess that's what the other two settings are examples of. I'm sure a Verizon setting will just be for Verizon apps. I don't have this handset and am on the wrong continent for Verizon, so can't check the settings directly.

Actually it stopped doing it since I disabled the google and verizon gps and just have standalone gps services.

I've only seen this when I was near a router that had been moved far from its known Google location (example: Google car detected my router in an apartment, then I moved it to another city entirely. Location ping ponged for a while at the new location since the Verizon location and the Google location didn't match). After a while, things get sorted out, but it helps to have a clear view of the sky to speed things up.
