I have the GPS turned off (via the widget), but the "GPS ON" icon is till on the top panel... How do I get this to go away?

go to settings, location and uncheck VZW location services and it will go away. At least it did for me.

You lose the ability to use VZ Navigator or any other app that uses GPS from the Verizon app store. So if you are just using Google Maps/Navigation then you are safe to turn that off.
