My wifes phone is pictured below. When she lets the battery completely drain and plugs it in she gets this screen. If you let it charge for a while, say 1hr or more, you can boot it by holding a the power button down for a few seconds (I dont know exactly how long but at least 5 and maybe 10 or more).

If I unplug it/restart it/etc before that 1hr it comes back to this screen. This will also happen if the battery is low - not dead - and while charging you try to restart. I have the same phone and if my phone goes dead I plug it in and see the battery charging and can start the phone normally at any time. So not sure what is going on. System wise, stock system upgraded to JB a couple months ago. Problem existed before and after that. Not a huge issue but slightly irritating.

    That is rather curious!
Is her phone rooted? Did she buy it new or get it used?

That's Odin download mode. Normally you would get there by holding both volume buttons and then plugging in the USB cable. I don't know why it would do it because the battery is low.

I have been playing around with it. If the USB is plugged into the phone, regardless of battery life, it will go to that screen if you try to shutdown or to restart. I don't think it has anything to do with amount of battery life anymore as I have been testing it at all different levels the last few days. And the volume buttons otherwise work fine and are not depressed when restarting. Also I did it with the USB plugged into the phone but not the outlet or comp etc - so the phone was not charging or connected to anything and it did the same.

I may try just a reset to see if that helps.

Ok - The problem was solved. Our charger had the original Samsung/Tmobile wall charger but for some reason we were using the USB cable from an old USB LG Ally phone. Using the original USB that came with the phone and all is well.

Kudos to tech support at Tmobile. It was his suggestion to check the charger/cable.

The USB must be hitting the correct pins in the charging outlet at the correct points, acting almost like a jig, therefore forcing Hercules into Odin mode(download mode) try doff USB cable, if that doesn't work call Sammy/ T-Mobile and tell them your problem, they should fix it, that is very strange
