I have attempted to install the OTA GSM 4.0.4 update. This downloads, the phone reboots and then gets stays on a screen with the Google logo.

This is a completely stock UK GSM phone running 4.0.2 the OTA update for 4.0.2 installed without any issues.

Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this. I really do not want to start flashing the phone myself and sending it back to Samsung is not something i want to do.

    Thanks

Where did you get the 4.0.4 update from?

Was it Menu > Settings > About Phone > Check for Updates?

I have the same problem. I received the update now for the 3rd time (OTA)
and each time after reboot it got stuck while displaying the google logo.
To make it work again I had to remove the battery, pressing the power button had no effect.
But the previous update from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 did work seamlessly.
    The phone is not rooted.

Does anybody know if and how I can force the phone the re-download the
kernel update file? Because my only idea is that the update file is broken in some way.

So it downloads the update, reboots like it is going to install and then gets stuck at Google logo? Removing the battery brings you back up, but the software hasn't actually updated?

    Correct.
But it downloaded it only once when it received the 4.0.4 update for the first time (which of course makes sense for successfull downloads).

Good find - that is what I was thinking. Sounded like the update wasn't actually applying.

Here is the quote from XDA for those wondering:
