gt540 usb cable not charging

Recently I bought a new cable for my gt540 because the original one was already broken. But I notice that its not charging at all. It only shows the "charging" symbol but its not charging, as in the power doesn't go up. Now I can't use it unless its plugged, otherwise it will turn itself off because of very low battery. Can anyone help me with this? Is the phone only works with LG-brand cable wires?!
