Ok, recent Handcent updates on my Note 3 have been horrible! And their customer support is non existent.
    So fellow Androiders....help!

What is your favorite SMS/MMS replacement app and why?

Evolve SMS. Bought the advanced pack thingy for full features.

It's simple, it's fast, it does the split SMS to multiple threads for multiple recipients thing. A lot of SMS apps that are lightweight don't do that, and for some reason, Samsungs sold in my country don't have it built in (I hear in the US they have it).

Been using Textra for a while now. Simple, light, does what I need (send/receive SMS, not slow down with long conversations).

But I did just install Evolve and that has come on since I last used it (though Textra is still faster for some things). May give it a go for a couple of days.

used textra for a long time, then switched to chomp which i have now used for a while, perfectly happy with it.

I like evolve but to many mms problems, Textra is okay but I had an issue where I wouldn't get notifications for new sms. Chomp had the same issue.
I liked hellosms but it got really buggy and again mms issues.,
I tried gosms and it was just awful, I expected that though.
Hangouts has gotten pretty bad since the last update.

8sms is pretty good. I've never had any problems with it. Give it a try!

Many programs seem to be having trouble with MMS lately. Is this a KitKat problem?

Not likely. I have Kitkat and MMS works fine on EvolveSMS. Probably a specific ROM issue?

Mysms is my favorite, and it's free. The main reason is being able to send text messages from a pc. It has the option for pop up notifications. I can delete or reply to a message from the notifications panel. I can set custom tones/led color for individuals. The Web version is clean and super fast. Deleted and sent messages are sync on all devices.

I just switched last night from Handcent to Evolve, thanks to this thread!

So far I really like it.

Textra. No extras. No emoji. Exactly what I want. Chomp does fine, but I don't need the extras.

The new TOS on Handcent made me uninstall it before using it.

I just tried Textra, now this is my default SMS app!

But you're wrong, Emoji are available!

No Emoji on mine - nothing in settings. No long press, no key on keyboard. If I use keyboard symbols, they don't change. ;p

Just looked at some of my daughter's texts using both Evolve and Textra, and on mine they appear as keyboard symbols on Textra and as emoticons with Evolve (that's with "enable emoticons" ticked in Evolve settings but no emoji downloads).

Got Evolve looking prettier now (chose a theme I liked then decompiled it to fix the things I thought could be improved), but Textra is that little bit faster (particularly scrolling through the conversation list, for some reason). So still alternating at the moment.

OK, now I've settled on Chomp SMS as my default. For now...

Their is an emoji plugin you have to download.

I think zuben is perfectly happy without it though :)
