question -- whats a "HARD RESET" compared to a "battery pull" or selecting "return to factory defaults" (under settings)? what deletes all your data?

    1. Download the Forums for Android™ app!

    1. Turn off your Eris.
    2. Hold the volume down key, send, and end.
    3. Press trackball to agree to reset.

Hard reset and battery pull are the same thing, this does not change your settings or lose data.

'Return to factory defaults' is just that, all downloaded apps are removed and settings are changed to be the same as when the phone came out of the box.
I don't know for SURE, but I believe non-app data on the SD card (music, for instance) would not be deleted. But it would be a good idea to back up the SD card first - just to make sure.

this deletes everything then? while a battery pull is for lockups/etc.

in what case would u want to do a hard reset?

Hard reset does NOT delete anything on your SD card.

Those steps reset your phone to when you first took it out of the box.

A battery pull just restarts your phone.
