First of all I think the original post needs to be broken down. When you say 2.2.1 and 2.3.340 you're talking about the same software. 2.2.1 is the Android version and 2.3.340 is the system version. Yes, 2.3.340 has been rooted...months ago and is easily accomplished using z4root as suggested here already. You can find that here.

Next, the newest version of Android is Android version 2.3.3 and system version 4.5.595. This also can be rooted using Gingerbreak found here.

Hopefully this helps.

im a dummy when it comes to all this so you confused me, lol.

Ok
in
ABOUT PHONE it says
system version 2.3.15mb810.verizon.en.us

under that it says
ANDROID VERSION
2.2

I get a pop up message that says to update to version 2.3.340

I've been hitting the "no thanks" lol for the past few months, good thing the message only comes on every 12 hrs...

So, my question

Has that 2.3.340 thing been rooted? And if i update, do I need a different version of z4root????

I have the z4root that worked on my android version 2.2

or do i even need to reroot after the update, or no?

huh?! lolololol

Yes. If you accept the upgrade and your phone moves to Android version 2.2.1 you will no longer be rooted. But do not fret! 2.2.1 is easily rooted using z4root 1.3.0 which you can find in the link from my previous post.
