The funny thing is, all of of those except the Desire are US CDMA phones on Sprint and Verizon.

I think the only reason the Eris is up there, is because it was many people (including me) first Android smartphone, because it was cheap. That, and the enormous amount of troubleshooting threads and a reasonably healthy root community.

I'm a regular contributor to the Evo forums + subforums, and I've noticed this as well. In general, the post count correlates with the launch of the phone. The earlier the launch, the more time the thread is in existence and accumulates posts. Clearly popularity of the phone can shift this, and that's how the Evo surpassed the Motorola Droid forums, and why the Samsung Epic is nowhere to be seen.

HTC also has an incredibly active and mature rooting community. The rooting tool that most people use for HTC phones, unrEVOked, supports 6 HTC phones. The Evo's all things root subforum continues to be very active 8 months after launch. I assume the Incredible as well as the other HTC phones on your list gets the same kind of activity.

You're right; Droid X is doing quite well despite the locked bootloader. It's probably the king Android phone under Verizon at the moment. The Thunderbolt is going to be very popular, so I'd expect to see those forums to be quite busy as well.
