Has anyone found an HDMI cable that will allow me to hook my S3 display to my big screen TV? I bought one from NewEgg, but it didn't work...the seller eventually decided it was only for the S2.

You need to use an MHL adapter. I have the Samsung-branded one for the S3, works fine. I think any HDMI cable would work with the MHL adapter.

Take note only the Samsung MHL adapter works do not try to use a standard MHL Adapter. The S3 has diff pins and only the MHL adapter from Samsung works
HDTV Adapter (5 Pin) w/ HDTV Adapter Tip

Negative. Do not use this link. This is NOT for the S3. 5 pin is old 1.0 HML standard.

You want this: Samsung EPL-3FHUBEGSTA HDTV MHL Smart 11 PIN micro usb to hdmi adapter specifically for the Galaxy S3.

Check ebay. The 'real' ones will cost between $35 and $45. Do not be tempted by lower costing ones. Trust me on this!

No worries. I got suckered into one of those 5 pin ones, when the phone first came out here, cause it was labeled as an S3 accessory online. People then found out these didn't work. Then I tried the 5 to 11 pin adaptor piece. That still won't work. You HAVE to get the Samsung dongle, because of the new MHL 2.0 standard built into the S3.

Just don't want anyone to make the same mistake as me and waste money. There was no negative intent meant towards your post. Hope it didn't come off that way? :p

I purchased an MHL adapter from monoprice.com ($11) for my old LG Spectrum. It didn't work on the Samsung Galaxy SIII, so I got from Amazon an official Samsung 5 to 11 pin adapter ($10) to add to it. It all works fine together now.

And it's roughly about half the price of an official Samsung MHL adapter. Add any HDMI cable (I recommend monoprice.com) and you'll be good to go.

No worries I'm glad glad you saw that. I agree I hate to see people waste good money too. That's part of what we do is help each other. GO TEAM USA!!! sorry had to add that part.:D

I also tried the parts liteon163 listed, and it didn't work for me, either. I tried it both on my Samsung plasma big screen, and my computer monitor, and in both cases the hardware seemed to recognize each other, but I never got a picture.

Can anyone tell me if the power port on the Samsung HDMI adapter will also charge the phone while you are watching a movie through the HDMI cable. My droid Charge had a dedicated HDMI port so you were able to keep the phone connected to the charger through the micro usb at the same time.

If not, how do you keep the phone charged while using the HDMI?

You'll need a MHL adapter with HDMI cable. This MHL must be powered with a charger (you can use the charger which came with your phone).
And yes, the phone will be charged while it is connected to the TV via MHL :)

With these adapters do you have to use a standard HDMI cable like you would use from cable box to TV or do you use the micro HDMI to standard HDMI cable?

If MHL seems to be working but doesn't quite actually mirror your phone, be patient. The Galaxy SIII seems to need to load up a driver or something. Give the phone a few minutes and then it should be fine. And you HAVE TO plug a charger into the side of the MHL adapter or it will not work at all.

I learned these things the hard way so you don't have to.

Sorry if this has been answered but if you connect the phone with the mhl adapter+hdmi cable to a HDTV, will it only display videos/play music or will it actually show exactly what is displayed on the phone(like when you connect a HDTV to your desktop)?

I got the Skivia adapter on Amazon after seeing it had a large number of positive reviews:

Amazon.com: Skiva MHL Micro USB to male HDMI cable (6.5 feet) for Samsung Galaxy S3 (SIII LTE i9300 L710 i747 i535 T999) and Samsung Note 2 Smarphones (HD-X3): Electronics

It seems to work alright, although on my HDTV it seems like the picture is "zoomed" a little and all four edges are cropped off a little. I'm thinking it must be my TV though since I haven't seen anyone else listing this issue within the product reviews...

I might have returned it because of this issue if it weren't a gift, so it cost me nothing.

Question: it would be great to watch videos on a tv using this, but I'm curious if music apps will work. I have my tv audio going through my receiver and I'd like to be able to plug my phone into the HDMI on the tv and listen to my music. Do you know if this works? Thanks.

Yes, routing the audio stream like that would work. But you'd have a shorter signal path if you connected the phone directly to the receiver. This could be accomplished either via HDMI (if your receiver is capable) or an auxiliary cable from the headphone jack.

Thanks for the reply. That's a good point regarding feeding the audio straight into the receiver. I know mine doesn't have an auxillary input and I don't think it has HDMI either, but I'll check. Perhaps I'm due for an upgrade.
