I am trying to play YouTube videos and output them to my TV. Can I do this by using the HDMI cable supplied with the phone?

When I tried it with just the cable, it only gave me the options to display the pictures or videos on my phone. How do I bring up the YouTube app or is that not possible?

not possible without the webtop dock. or rooting your phone.

Have you tried using on of the market apps to download YouTube videos and then playing back the downloaded file rather than the streaming one?

I saw someone pull up the webtop, in a Youtub video by just plugging in the phone using the USB cord to a wall outlet and using the HDMI cable at the same time.

That phone was a prerelease and different than what came out. To do that now, you need to be rooted and perform the WebtopMod hack to get around needing the dock or laptop. Unless motorola enables it on another update, HDMI mirroring is not possible with the Atrix1
