Headphones in signal on phone won't turn off

Hi there. I am very new to this sort of thing. I have an htc hero and the headphone symbol on top of the phone is on and the phone acts as if it has headphones in. It does not. Will work with headphones in. Can anyone tell me how to get the phone to work normally?

First thing I'd try is to power cycle the phone. If that doesn't work then you could try a master reset but that'll wipe your data from the phone. Otherwise you might have a faulty phone.
