Hello, new in here, Just thought I'd introduce myself before I go and ask questions

Well, I have retired, I travel now, pack on my back, tent, sleeping bag, and seeing whats over the next horizon, looking for the elusive free WiFi

I have travelled over Africa, UK to Australia, seen lots of countries, had a great time, met lots of people, taken thousands of photos

I got a new christmas prezzie and I have no idea how to use it, so I'm off to ask questions now, drop by, say hello, I might have that free Wifi ;)

Ah, but I am the new kid (now thats a stretch of the imagination)

This Galaxy and Android system is a whole new world to me, a new learning curve (I think they call it)

I have never even owned a mobile phone, let alone one of these

If I want someone, I just used a landline phone or email, when away I used my iPod and Skype (or the laptop)

    Thanks for the welcome

    Hello Metroid,
Ah, my carrier would be Sky then, they do everything here, satalite TV, phone line, internet, Wifi, used to have HD TV until they put the price up, still see the same programs, just cheaper now

(still trying to find my way round these forums, a bit like the new kid, who is several years behind the rest of you )

Scoobydoo25, welcome to the site and Android. You know what's cool about an Android device? This. Unlocked GPS chip for third party applications.

You like to travel, well I suggest you use Oruxmaps. It's free. I doesn't quite do navigation like Google maps, but it does do a boat load of other things that can come in handy for a happy camper like you.

    Hi Teddy
Thanks, but you are going to have to explain about these 3rd party apps, I know absolutely bugger all about android or a Galaxy
I think I have just done the basics (turn on, and update it, got emails, wifi thats all)

Sorry for not explaining better. Third party apps are those not included in basic Android, like gmail, maps, others that you download from the play store. And actually calling them thrid party apps is a left over from my dumbphone days when we hacked them to unlock the GPS chip, then get java running on them to be able to use one of the original versions of gmaps.

And don't worry, I didn't know bugger about android when I got my first one, it took me at least two to three weeks to get a handle on it.

    good luck

I am getting to grips with it at the moment, but some of the games and apps on there are pretty lame (am I allowed to say that)

They dont exactly inspire me (even the paid ones arent much cop, but before I think of busting it, or the term is jail breaking , (I havent had it a week yeyt, so I better keep it in warranty)

I should get my head round what I got at the moment

Still haveing problem with favourites or book marks,

I try and save a web page, but it dont do it, so Google gets a lot of use, same as these free ebooks websites, trying to find the dam books

I haven't had the chance yet... so hello and welcome to these forums.

I'm not a gamer so I've not paid much attention to what's out there for amusement. I do hear talk about this game and that so there must be some that do have entertainment value and have a following. We have a discussion area for Android games that you might enjoy. Here is a link: Android Games - Android Forums

Gaining root permissions and installing a different rom is not for everyone.
When you long for more and discover a limitation to your device that you can't live with... that's when taking a serious look at changing your phone seems warranted. However, there are many that just enjoy the freedom of choice and the challenge of it all. It's there.. it is a choice... that's a great thing about Android devices.

I hope you are enjoying your time here. It's a pleasure to have you as a member.

    Hi, olbriar
Yes, been pretty good in here so far, got plenty of help from members, certainly helped me a lot, BUT today I found a pren thing, tucked in the side, no one mentioned that, I been using a finger to swipe it  no wonder I had finger mark on the screen:mad:

As I said not impressed with the games, I have tried a few, but soon uninstalled them after I found unless you paid for them, you didnt get any further than the first level or had to buy stuff (after my wife coughed up over

Just a couple of things Scoobydoo25.... I noticed that you spoke of playing tunes while reading a book. I think all you need do is start your player and then open a book to accomplish this. And... for dnlding pics to your laptop and uploading them to your blog... you could try taking your pictures with your phone and uploading them using a free ftp software from the play store.

I'm just tossing out things you might not have thought of. Things that might but fun trying at least. You have a powerful tool in your phone. Though it's not the device to replace all devices, there are many things it can do for you in it's small package.
    Have fun....

I dont have a phone, its a tablet, and when I was on my last trip I took over 4000 photos,(it was for 8 months) some of the places I went to, the last thing I want to do is get out a bit of a tech like a Galaxy note, someone tried to mug me for my camera, a Galaxy note would have been a gold mine for them, + lugging that in a back pack wouldnt be too clever after someone has seen me use it

I can use drag and drop on the laptop to upload photos to my blog, I dont think I could do that on the Galaxy note (I might be wrong here though)

When out anywhere now, I take the minimum of stuff and try and have my hands free, if I have a day bag, I wear it on the front

Yes opening the player then opening a book does work, thanks

Does Samsung do the same as apple and have Christmas giveaways ?

    (a book, a film, an app, a game ?)

The free games are pretty rubbish, they only have one level, and unless you have a paid for game after that, you just start again, now I know why I dont play games, the underground app is very handy, but the Tunein wont let me sign in, or contact them, the BBCiPlayer will only work in the UK (it seems to recognise when I am anywhere else)

Still dont like the on screen keyboard (mind you I dont like it on the ipod either) but the new cover I have on the way will have either a connected keey board or a bluetooth one

But I still think its cumbersome loading a SD card, then putting that in the Galaxay just to read books, play music, watch films (I cant see why I would want to buy stuff when I already have lots of all of them)

Still havent found out how to copy them from the SD card to the Galaxy note

I've given up with this Galaxy now, I cant read books, I cant watch films, the books are fine on the PC, the ipod, the films are fine on the PC and the ipod, none of them work on this Galaxy
I have no idea what format the books are supposed to be in, the same as the films
I have just copied them onto a 32 Gb micro card, then tried to play them, I have even installed VLC player which plays everything on a PC, but on this this its crap

As far as I am concerned this android system is the bllody pits, I would have been better off with an ipad, it maybe dearer, but it does work
