Is there a step by step guide how to flash a custom rom. I just recently rooted my Lg vm670. ( virgin mobile). I got it for free and I figured id learn on it before I get something expensive. Been reading tons of stuff, and always encounter the same problem : " u have to do this first, u have to do that before this...etc".. for now I just want to get a custom rom. But idk what type screen I have. ( I have android 2.2.2) and more..idk what is adb?.. I want to learn all this but terms are killing me. :). It even says if I use something as simple as rom manager I can brick the phone if I flash wrong rom. In what order do I install whatever I need to get my custom rom. ...help please?.. a link is sufficient...

You have to go a bit slower man. Did the rooting process give you a custom recovery like Clockworkmod?
The problem is that each phone is different. A rom that works on my phone wont work on yours so you need advice from people with the exact same model or at least the same manufacturer. I can only give general help. First thing you need though is a custom recovery

Didn't know I was supposed to get that by rooting. How do I check that.? I. Didn't see anything different about my phone after rooting. All I did was install root checker to see it was really rooted. And install titanium backup to get rid of bloatware. Everything else seems to be the same. Then again I don't know how to read most of the files. Where would it say what kind of recovery I have?

No problem.
Go to the All Things Root Guide sticky at the top of the forum.
I have tried to compile the most complete list of anything you should ever want to know concerning a rooted V.
Look at the Guide: "How to install a flash_image; flash a recovery, ROM, and theme".
Now that you are rooted it is extremely important that you install a custom recovery and make that all important backup of the stock ROM.
No backup = no way to recover from a mistake= possible brick.
As long as you have a backup, you can fix any mistake you make, as long as you NEVER USE THE FACTORY RESET OPTION IN THE PRIVACY SETTING ON THE PHONE= brick.
You can only use the "wipe data/factory reset" option found in a custom recovery.

Any questions, just ask. We are happy to help.

It says : download root browser to unzip flash_image and recovery.."... how, lol? When I open root browser I don't see anything saying recovery. Is there another name for it?. There are 100's of files on there. Idk where this phone has been before me but there's sprint and att files and all kinds of stuff...do I have to get rid of all that?... I'm sorry if u get aggravated w me lol...as I said...I'm learning

You have to go to the /sdcard directory. When you first open it up the app, scroll down till you see sdcard. Select it. This is the root of the sdcard. Then scroll down till you see the recovery and flash_image.

If the recovery and flash_image is already unzipped the recovery will have .img on the end.
The flash_image will either have .bin on the end or nothing.

If you have to unzip one or both just long press and select the extract option.

NOTE: These will need to be in the /sdcard directory, not in any folder. If you downloaded them from the browser on the phone you will need to move them from the download folder to the /sdcard directory (root of the sd card).
Everything else in the zip form you can have in a folder. I have ROMs, Gapps, and all sorts of other flashable zip files in a folder I named All_ROM_Stuff. When in the recovery I just navigate to that folder to install.
You can't do this with the recovery or the flash_image. They must be on the root of the sd card.

When you open root browser, all you have to do is scroll down to sdcard and click on it, that opens all the files on your sdcard.

No recovery on sd card..

Sd card - android secure
- android
- app tyrant
- data
- DCIM
- lost.dir
- pictures
- romtoolbox
- titanium backup

You need to put them there for them to be there.
If you have already downloaded them from a PC you need to transfer to root of sd card.
I didn't see a download folder so I know you didn't download from your phones browser, unless you tried to use stock browser. If so, use Dolphin Browser instead.

Why don't you let us know how you downloaded, and where you put the files.

This is ALL the things I did. Got on you tube and found " how to root lg v" . There was a link in the description and when I hit that, it downloaded gingerbreak on my phone. ..I opened it and pressed " root device" and phone went off and on. And was rooted. It took literally 10 sec. When it came back on I had superuser icon on it.
I installed root checker and titanium backup. Backed up everything on it. Then uninstalled bloatware.
That's it. I never downloaded anything from anywhere. And everything was done on my phone. I don't use my PC.

I searched all files in root browser and the only one that says recovery ( only) is in cache. And its empty

Wait a minute..lol...is there a " stock recovery" ( like a stock rom) that comes with the phone, or I have to download it to even have it?

Ok...I think I have it figured out..so far. Ill go and install zen garden. ( I'm assuming I have a hitachi screen since I have 2.2.2 zv5. )...and keep following ur guide... see what hapens..

In the simplified root, recovery, rom guide says to install flash_image for VM670NH. My phone says its VM670. ( zv5, 2.2.2)......
Is that the same thing? And can I use that guide for my phone?

Here is a better guide for you to follow :
http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/697813-how-install-flash_image-flash-recovery-rom-theme.html
Follow this guide to the letter, and you can't go wrong.
Right now the MiRaGe Rom is the most stable for our phone and i would recommend the zengarden recovery, it has an option to get out of a bootloop and some other goodies built in. It saved me from bricking my phone twice.

Just make sure you read the guide to get familiar with it and understand each step before you do it, don't be afraid to ask questions, we will be glad to help.

And please don't forget to make a backup of your phone, (most important) . If you have a backup, you can always fix your phone if you can get into your recovery

I backed up everything in titanium backup. Is that what u mean by backing up my phone? Or is that anything else I need to backup..

Once the flash_image and ZenGarden recovery are installed you need to go to the backup and restore section of the ZenGarden. Select the backup option. This will make a nandroid backup of your currently installed ROM ( absolutely everything is backed up).
This is the backup that is needed.
This is kind of like a restore point on a computer.
It's stored in a folder on the sd card named "clockworkmod". Copy/paste this to your computer, just in case you ever accidently erase the sd card.

I tried to download zen garden and flash image from several sources...none will download??... says unseccesful download. Content not supported on ur phone??... huh?

I see its a flash image GUI, so I'm guessing ill be following the 2nd ( easier) method... it downloaded no problem. Thanx Bad Blue. . ( love the new prof pic btw)...

Try downloading it with another browser such as Dolphin.
