    Hi there!

I have joined this community in the hope of finding a solution for an issue I am having with my beloved Galaxy Note 8 GT-N5100. Basically it stopped working and all I am interested in is to recover the content from the internal drive (eMMC). I have taken it to a company that specialise in data recovery but unfortunately I was told that it was impossible to recover anything simply because, according to the tech guy, the motherboard has the two protective plates missing and the actual internal drive could have been demaged. Now, this really confuses me as I have never tempered with the motherboard, however I have taken the device a few weeks back to an authorised Samsung technician in the hope to fix the issue. Now I have the suspicion that those protective plates have been removed by him and they haven't been put back where they belonged. I am attaching a picture where the missing parts are highlighted by two red circles. Whoever know the motherboard of this particular model will be able to spot the missing bits. My question is...Is there anyone who can advise me on what is possible that can be done to try to save the content of the internal drive? Are those missing metallic plates essential for the recovery of data? I am not very savvy on tech things so any help is really appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.

Hey Laura, welcome to our AndroidForums.

You can definitely see the protective plates in this video (4:26 into the video):

but there was obviously no reason for the person making that video to remove those plates/covers.

I'm wondering if they did that to see if the chips were easily removable (which I'm guessing they are not and are soldered on).

Not sure what else to tell you since I'm not a data recovery specialist...

If the board is dead and damaged, and probably won't power up at all. Only chance of retrieving data from the flash chips is to actually physically remove them, and put them in a special rig that can read them directly. Which is something the FBI or NSA might use to recover evidence data from destroyed or smashed phones. Very specialized and extremely expensive. I believe Drive Savers can do this sort of thing.

Any data recovery company that does chip off forensics should be able to help you. The cost usually starts at a few hundred dollars.
