i am getting this error and my phone does not boot even after succesfull flas.
    i have galaxy s vibrant i9000m

after flash u get this error:

    E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
    (No such file or directory)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:copy default media content failed
    e: can't mount sdcard:update.zip.

what is the adb command to force the phone to read the update.zip from
    sdcard/sd/update.zip and not the sdcard/update.zip

i have no clue why i am having this error i tried like 6 to 7 firmware always same thing no go beyond the samsung logo.

From what I have read, there's no way to read the update.zip from the external SD. But who knows. Search around on XDA, may be you will find something, but I am not hopeful.

And since you have a I9000M, it probably means you can't enter upload mode, and hence cannot flash via ODIN. It is generally recommended that I9000M users don't mess around with their ROM until a way to flash via ODIN comes out. Guess you missed that while reading the FAQs.

    thanks for the info.
i searched a lot and did not find anything about reading the update.zip for external SD card.

for the i9000, i have no issue to get recovery mode or download,
i flashed it more then 10 times.
what people says its not true , this Animal need special timing to release and re-apply button to get recovery.

So is yours a i9000 or an i9000M? Which one does it say during start up?

Yes I do have the bell i9000m from bell Canada.

I was having issues, but I found that it goes in recovery and download mode,
It's just a timing issue, and it has to be plugged by USB. If not i was never able to put it in this mode.
